More than 100 million babies are born each year worldwide. These newborns must transition from the fluid-filled fetal environment, where the placenta functions as the gas exchange organ, to an environment where the baby’s cardiopulmonary system must function immediately after birth.

At least 90% of newborns successfully make this transition without assistance. The remaining 10% require some help at birth, and approximately 1% may need intensive resuscitation from skilled individuals or teams. Without appropriate support, these babies are at high risk of lifelong complications or death.

Therefore, skills in neonatal resuscitation are essential for all healthcare staff involved in the care of newborns.

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is one of the training programmes provided for healthcare personnel at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) and Hospital Pakar Kanak-Kanak UKM (HPKK), specifically for the Neonatal and Obstetrics & Gynecology (O&G) disciplines. This programme offers training to equip healthcare staff with essential neonatal resuscitation skills.

It aligns with the noble objective of improving patient recovery and training healthcare staff to be competent and confident when facing neonatal resuscitation scenarios.

This goal continues to be achieved through the commitment of a dedicated committee, alongside strong support from hospital management.
