Media Literacy and Societal Change

Examining the role of social media, influence, and digital campaigns in behavioural change. Digital media serve as catalysts for societal change, influencing behaviour, attitudes, and public discourse. Social media platforms function as arenas where individuals interact with creative content, form opinions, and participate in social movements. Influence, reach, trust, and credibility play crucial roles in empowering media literacy, shaping user behaviours, political views, and social norms. Additionally, digital campaigns—including public health initiatives and advocacy movements—have the potential for online engagement that can drive real-world action. This subtheme explores the mechanisms of digital media that encourage behavioural change, considering ethical issues and their implications for policy, marketing, and activism in the digital era.

Intercultural Communication

In an increasingly connected world, intercultural communication plays a vital role in shaping how individuals, organisations, and societies interact. Multicultural societies have diverse perspectives, languages, and traditions, influencing communication strategies across various contexts, including business, media, education, and diplomacy. Effective intercultural communication fosters mutual understanding, reduces conflict, and enhances cooperation in a global environment. This subtheme examines how cultural diversity affects communication dynamics and the challenges of navigating cultural differences, as well as developing inclusive strategies that encourage meaningful engagement in multicultural environments.

Health Communication

Addressing health issues such as vaccination, mental health, and non-communicable diseases through effective SBCC. Health communication plays an important role in shaping perceptions, behaviours, and public policies related to urgent health issues like vaccination, mental health, and non-communicable diseases. SBCC strategies utilise media, community engagement, and targeted messaging to promote health literacy, encourage preventive measures, and combat misinformation. By using culturally sensitive and evidence-based approaches, SBCC increases public trust in healthcare systems and fosters positive health outcomes. This subtheme explores the impact of communication in addressing health challenges, the role of digital platforms in spreading health awareness, and innovative strategies for promoting population well-being.

Youth, Community, and Advocacy

Understanding the role of youth and grassroots movements in driving social change. Youth and communities are key in shaping society's future through activism, innovation, and grassroots movements. Their involvement in social, environmental, and political issues brings meaningful change, advocating for marginalised voices and challenging systemic injustices. Digital platforms, volunteer work, and community-based initiatives empower young people to lead, advocate for policy reforms, and drive sustainable development. This subtheme explores how youth-led or community-driven movements influence societal progress, the challenges they face, and strategies to enhance their participation in decision-making processes.

Communication Policy and Organisational Dynamics

Addressing systemic challenges in social behaviour change communication. Effective communication policies and organisational strategies shape behavioural change initiatives across different fields. Well-planned policies ensure clear, culturally appropriate, and high-impact messages, while robust organisational frameworks can foster collaboration, resource sharing, and program effectiveness. From social media regulation to ethical influencer marketing and grassroots mobilisation, this subtheme explores how institutions and policies can support sustainable behavioural change. It also discusses challenges such as misinformation, resistance to change, and gaps in policy implementation, offering guidelines for best practices to maximise communication impact.
