Version: 4.0.47--><div id=\"midblock\">\n<div class=\"insidem\">\n<div class=\"news_item_a\">\n<div class=\"newsitem_tools\">\n<div class=\"newsitem_info\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"createdate\">THURSDAY, 20 DECEMBER 2012 08:27<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"newsitem_text\">\n<div class=\"news_item_article\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/VietnamMain.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Saiful Bahri Kamaruddin<br \/>\nPix Izwan Azman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BANGI, 13 Dec 2012 \u2013\u00a0Vietnam\u2019s\u00a0top Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for Women\u2019s rights wants to learn more about The National University of Malaysia\u2019s (UKM) research on Women Leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vice-President of the Vietnam Women\u2019s Union (VWU), Nguyen Thi Kim Thuy said although her country has many female leaders, it did not occur to them to carry out such a study on their own women leaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She made the remarks following an a hour-long discussion with UKM\u2019s Director of the Centre for Women\u2019s Leadership, Associate Prof Dr Madeline Berma and Deputy Director, Dr Bahiyah Dato\u2019 Hj Abdul Hamidtoday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mrs Thuy, who led a 10 member delegation of VWU on a two day whirlwind tour of Malaysia, had also met officials from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and representativesof the National Council of Women\u2019s Organisation (NCWO).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The VWU represents all of Vietnam\u2019s women movements and serves a role similar to the NCWO in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mrs Thuy said her country had many women leaders throughout its history in government and business but no research had been done on them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/Vietnam1.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/vietnam2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/vietnam3.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nShe said one of the women\u2019s unions may take the cue from UKM\u2019s Centre for Women\u2019s Leadership and do something similar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vietnam\u2019s constitution, she said, does not discriminate between males and females and all of the posts and jobs there are open to women though there can sometimes be very subtle discrimination which is very difficult to prove.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mrs Thuy said VWU is always consulted by the government whenever a major decision is to be made or laws proposed in its parliament, the People\u2019s Consultative Assembly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">VWU is doing studies on gender, family and science and provides training for women in an academy that was set up recently in Ho Chih Minh City (Saigon).<\/p>\n<p>She said women are particularly well-represented in the media and publishing industries in Vietnam but are lagging behind in the top administrative posts and political decision-making. In Education, there is parity between males and females entering universities, but at the post-graduate and PhD levels the men outnumber the women slightly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/vietnam4.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/vietnam5.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/vietnam6.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAs Vietnam becomes industrialised, she noted that more women are entering the manufacturing work-force. So, more vocational training for young women is needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asso Prof Bermaoffered to help the VWU organise short courses on leadership training which can be facilitated through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Centre for Women\u2019s Leadership is researching female leadership and have identified 12 candidates in politics, business and community services. The research startedby Assoc Prof Bermaearlier this year is aimed at finding out the qualities that can make women become leaders in various fields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The VWU was established in 1930 during the French colonial era.
