Version: 4.0.47--><div id=\"midblock\">\n<div class=\"insidem\">\n<div class=\"news_item_a\">\n<div class=\"newsitem_tools\">\n<div class=\"newsitem_info\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"createdate\">FRIDAY, 05 OCTOBER 2012 00:00<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"newsitem_text\">\n<div class=\"news_item_article\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/news\/images\/stories\/Campus2012\/MahkamahMootVCSpeech1.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Rejal Arbee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BANGI, 2 Oct 2012 \u2013 The National University of Malaysia (UKM) aims at unlocking the\u00a0potential of its assets to produce new talents as well as technological innovations from its intellectual property for wealth and job creation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its Vice Chancellor, Prof Tan Sri Dato\u2019 Wira Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin said this could be done through its start-up companies thereby helping to vitalise the economy to create high paying jobs and increase productivity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The university is already producing a new talent pool of engineers, scientists, inventors, product development experts as well as entrepreneurial managers to harvest the value of its start-ups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She said through its start-ups, the university has been able to converge its creative genius with business ingredients to create entrepreneurship and new business development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at the launching of the third Tuanku Ja\u2019afar Law Conference on Academic Entrepreneurship and University Start-ups\u00a0 by UKM Chancellor, Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir here today, she said UKM is integrating innovation and entrepreneurship in its undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum as well as its research and development efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This allows for its faculty members, researchers and students to work in a learning environment enriched with experiences for bringing research output to the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof Sharifah Hapsah said without innovation and entrepreneurship, research discoveries and patents would remain on laboratory shelves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus Academic Entrepreneurship adds value to the university\u2019s traditional roles of generating knowledge through research and disseminating it through scholarly publications and providing education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as service for the public good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In carrying out its new role, she said, the university needed to overcome the differences in culture, values and environment of the marketplace and academia giving the difference in academic need for unrestricted publishing and the business need for commercial confidentiality as an example.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She said UKM had invested heavily in academic entrepreneurship (AE) capacity building for its staff and researchers, developing appropriate intellectual property policies and incentives as well as establishing the infrastructure to support academic entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To date it has executed 15 licenses and launched 33 new technology firms which have created at least 70 jobs ranging from CEO to CTO, COO, CFO, Project Managers, Business Development and Entrepreneurs-in Residence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are supported by the Centre for Collaborative Innovations (PIK); UKM\u00a0Technology\u00a0Sdn.
