Aziz, is one of 20 people in Asia and Australia selected to receive the Australian Prime Minister\u2019s Australia Asia Endeavour Awards 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe Aussie PM\u2019s Australia Asia Postgraduate Award is a scholarship that provide full financial support for international student to undertake a postgraduate qualification at the PhD level by research in any field of study in Australia. It is for a maximum period of three and a half years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nDr Safiyyah will be doing her\u00a0post-doctorate research in clinical psychology at the University of Western Australia from next January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe award is given to those who excelled academically and have experience in doing community service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nDr Safiyyah, who is one of the drafters of the Malaysian Child Act\u00a0 2001, has been actively involved in doing social volunteer work here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nApart from coming first in both of her undergraduate and post graduate studies, she also works with sexually abused children giving her time generously to various safe homes that protect\u00a0children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nAs a clinical psychologist she has been very active in dealing with a numerous abused children and children who are considered problematic. She is also a volunteer at \u2018Rumah Solehah\u2019, a center for children with HIV and Aids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nShe attributed her passion in volunteering and helping those in need to the very early training she received from her father.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cSince I was \u00a05, my father would bring me and my siblings to the children\u2019s homes and other such places and we thus got involved in volunteer work,\u201d Dr Safiyyah said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cI did not chose to focus on children but I guess it chose me. It actually started as a punishment. My friends and I went to this study camp when I was sixteen. We were so loud that we were sent to join another team which focussed on United Nations Convention on The Rights of Children. Ever since then I was interested in helping children,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nShe would be focusing on young students\u2019 language development for her PhD research. Basically it is about how children use their own speech to control their behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cLet say a child has behavioral problem like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) that have a very limited attention span. Basically its how they use their speech to control their behavior,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nHer research findings will enable parents and teachers to deal with children who are considered \u2018problematic\u2019 more effectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nDr Safiyyah hopes to return home and continue serving UKM and the country after finishing her PhD.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cA good part of this scholarship is I will have a twelve month internship in Australia.
