INTRODUCTION<\/p>\n
Research in the field of antioxidants has been conducted in the Faculty of Medicine Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) since 1985. Starting with vitamin E, the research has now expanded to other plant antioxidants such as microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, Piper sarmentosum (daun kadok), Piper betle (daun sireh), Zingiber Officinale Rhizome (ginger), Euricomalucidum (Tongkat Ali), Momordica charantia (daun pegaga), and Gelam honey. Realizing the importance of antioxidants in preventing oxidative insults in our body, the Antioxidant and Metabolism Cluster was set up under the Niche of Health and Medical Technology Research, UKM. The cluster was formed in August 2007 comprising of researchers from the Departments of Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Anatomy from the Faculty of Medicine of UKM, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Mouth Biology of Faculty of Dentistry and UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI). The expertise from the various departments contributes to the strength of antioxidant research in the cluster. Many research findings from the cluster have been published in reputed journals.<\/p>\n
