In an effort to meet the learning needs of gifted and talented students, Malaysian Government has developed a special program known as the PERMATA@Pintar. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has been mandated to develop, implement and monitor this programme which was launched on 3 April 2009. Pusat PERMATA@Pintar Negara, UKM is the only centre of excellence in Malaysia that is responsible for identifying gifted and talented students from all over the nation and providing them the opportunity to develop their potential and talents.

The center has four (4) main programmes, namely Talent Search and Management Programme, Enrichment Programme, PERMATA@Pintar College and ASASIpintar UKM (Pre-university Programme). This center’s conducive atmosphere is very suitable for effective teaching and learning environment for gifted and talented students. Various teaching methods are used such as Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), Problem Based Learning (PBL), tutorials, Cooperative Learning, and lectures in small groups, to enable students to get direct attention from the lecturers.
