UKM Global Webinar Series - The International Mobility Experience of Students from Malaysian and Japanese Universities<\/h2>\n

January 25th, 2022 (Tuesday) | 8.30 pm (GMT+8 Kuala Lumpur)<\/h4>\n

One of the most notable attributes of the internationalization of Higher Education Institutions has always been the impact of international student mobility. Today, students\u2019 involvement in international mobility programs can enhance graduate attributes that are highly valued by future employers. It may also develop 21st-century skills such as collaborative work, intercultural competence, communication and critical thinking skills, and digital literacy that further strengthen students\u2019 employability and potential for success. The global pandemic has challenged HEIs to reconceptualize physical student mobility. Alternative forms of mobility are being introduced by the HEIs across the world via virtual or hybrid mode.<\/p>\n

The panel will discuss the students\u2019 perspective and experience of studying and undergoing an international student mobility program via both the physical and virtual platforms. The discussion will focus on the benefits, issues, and challenges when undergoing student mobility and also how attending international student mobility to either Malaysia or Japan has impacted their life.<\/p>\n

<\/td>\nTiffany Tang<\/strong> has a background in Linguistics from the National University of Malaysia, as well as a Master\u2019s degree holder of Peace and Conflict (Global Studies) from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan.\n

During her bachelor study, she was an active UKM GIRC ambassador and attended the Global Student Leadership Program at Daegu Health College, Korea in 2016. Along with her engagements at GIRC, she crossed paths with various ambassadors from the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Croatia through Global Talk Series; as well as the master of ceremony for Seminar on Internationalization of Higher Education 2018. She spent a year abroad at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies majoring in Japanese language after being awarded the JASSO Scholarship by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.<\/p>\n

She is currently the representative and communications facilitator for Musashi University\u2019s Global Education Center to prepare students mobility to over 30 countries by developing intercultural understanding, planning and implementation skills.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nYuki Nishiyori<\/strong> has a Malay name called Hafiz. He is from Fukuoka, West Japan. He is 23 years old and studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS). He used to be a student at the University of Brunei for a year. During his third year of study at TUFS, he had the opportunity to study at Faculty of Economics UKM in 2018 for one year. He used to help conduct Japanese language classes at PPBL and Permata Pintar. He studied the language and history of Malaysia (Pengajian Malaysia). In his thesis, he wrote about Islamic finance. During his study years, he received an award and recognition as the Vice Champion of Japanese Malay Speech in 2017 and played the main character in Malay drama at University Festival in 2018. He was also a member of the administrative board of CO-OP TUFS in 2018 and the Head of several clubs & student activities.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nNurul Hidayah Mohd Noar<\/strong> is a Research Officer at the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. Prior to that, she was a teaching assistant at the Centre for Media and Information Warfare Studies (CMIWS), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). She obtained her undergraduate degree in Social Science (Political Science) from the National University of Malaysia (UKM). She did her M.A. in Media and Information Warfare Studies in 2018 at the Centre for Media and Information Warfare Studies, UiTM. Her current role as a research officer at SEARCCT involves conducting research activities on issues related to terrorism and counter-terrorism, organising SEARCCT\u2019s public awareness activities such as SEARCCT\u2019s University Lecture Series, and moderating content on SEARCCT\u2019s very own podcast channel. She is also a recognised Model ASEAN Meeting Trainer by the ASEAN Foundation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nKaoru Nakajima<\/strong> was born in the countryside of Tochigi Prefecture in Japan in 1992. She also has a Malay name, Suraya, which is the name given by her Malay language (BM) teacher at UKM. She is currently working for the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia as a researcher\/advisor of public relations to promote Japan to Malaysian people.\n

In 2018, she obtained a master\u2019s degree in Social Science in Hitotsubashi University, a national university in Tokyo. Her major was cultural anthropology and her research topic was about Malaysian society. She came to ATMA, UKM to learn BM in 2016 when she was 24 years old to pursue her study in the local language as it is crucial to understand society from the perspective of cultural anthropology. Her stay at UKM was just for one year but during the stay, she fell in love with Malaysia and even after she went back to Japan, she wanted to come back to Malaysia again and try to work here, communicating with Malaysian people and understanding more about the country and people.<\/p>\n

Before she acquired the opportunity to work in the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan, she worked in sales for three years in a Japanese manufacturing company in Kyoto, one of the most historical and beautiful places in Japan. She likes the city indeed, so she would like to introduce and promote the attraction of Kyoto, Japan to more and more Malaysian people, such as the beauty of nature, architecture and tradition cultivated from the long history of the place.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nAhmad Mujahid Ahmad Nizam<\/strong> is currently studying at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as a Third Year Linguistic Student. He was born in Kuantan, Pahang and stayed at Temerloh, Pahang since he was a child till to this day. He passed my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with flying colours and continued furthering his studies in Form 6, where he gained a 3.92 GPA. After finishing Form 6, he pursued his degree at UKM and he is hopeful that he could advance his studies until the master\u2019s degree and Phd level.
\nHe joined the UKM-Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) as an exchange programme student, from February 2021 until February 2022. The preparation was a bit tedious as there were tons of documents needed to be provided, especially after the global pandemic started which made the process even more of a hassle. Despite the recurring situation, he continued this exchange programme online, meeting up with his classmates from many countries, including European countries, East Asian countries and America. The time zone differences were a bit of a headache during his first month studying online, because Malaysia\u2019s is 1 hour earlier than Japan\u2019s. Furthermore, he didn\u2019t postpone his studies at UKM so he had to carry both of his study schedules from UKM and TUFS. He was glad that the administration allowed him to do so even though the contract said otherwise, as he participated it online instead of the traditional exchange programme.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nMaria Rica Duran Babanto<\/strong> is a first-year scholar student at Toyo University, one of Japan's most prominent universities. She is currently enrolled in a four-year Regional Development Studies program and a current exchange student at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She was previously a graduate student at Silliman University in the Philippines, where she earned a degree in Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship. Her team won a business proposal competition organized by the US Embassy in the Philippines and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in her third year of college, and they were given the opportunity to represent their institution at the US Embassy in the Philippines and the Department of Trade and Industry in Manila. She also completed BLOOMBERG's program and earned the title of Certified Financial Marketing Professional (CFMP).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/td>\nJohn Sebastian Tunggolou<\/strong> hails from Kota Kinabalu in the Land Below the Wind, Sabah. He is currently a final year undergraduate student pursuing an education degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at the Faculty of Education in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).\n

Throughout his time as an undergraduate student, he has been actively involved in student activities and programmes with UKM Global, Kolej Burhanuddin Helmi and the university's Cultural Centre. Among his involvements, he represented the university and Malaysia in the Youth Ecosperity Dialogue 2019 held in Singapore and came in 2nd Place in the Sustainability Innovation Challenge where he pitched for a reusable
\nwater tumbler scheme for Marina Bay Sands.<\/p>\n

He took part in the 1st Asian University Virtual Friendship Games 2021 and emerged as Top 3 in the Ambassador of Goodwill special event and has been invited to various online talks and webinars speaking on the topics of English communication skills, cultural diversity and embracing unity in Malaysia. For two years straight, he was involved with the U-LEAD Global Leadership Programme and in the 2021 edition of the programme, he was voted as Best Facilitator by the committee and participants for his consistent dedication and outstanding commitments.<\/p>\n

In 2021, he was granted a scholarship by Temasek Foundation to undergo the NUS Enterprise Summer Programme in Entrepreneurship and developed awareness of the diverse startup ecosystems and socio-cultural environment of Singapore and Southeast Asia. In the same year, he attended the Developing Cultural Competence Virtual Exchange Program organized by North Carolina State University where he led a group presentation of a cultural knowledge report.<\/p>\n

John is currently the President of UKMbassadors and has led the club into its\u2019 official establishment in 2021. He strongly believes that when there is a will, there shall always be a way and his life quote is \u201cto be an impact is by being one\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
