MEDICAL MOLECULAR BIOLOGY PROGRAMME

UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI)

PROGRAM SUMMARY

UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI) offers two post-graduate academic programmes by research, the Masters of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the field of Molecular Medicine. These programmes are aimed at students who are interested in conducting molecular-based research in the field of medicine. Both programmes place special emphasis on training students in the laboratory to develop and apply research strategies targeting specifically human diseases. UMBI recruits students from around the world and the programmes are delivered in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

At UMBI, we all strive for excellence, and we have our own best practices. We believe that results matter. We build on individual talent and potential, work not only in teams but also across teams and strive to improve the emotional intelligence of individuals as well as the teams. We focus on getting the best out of every team member. We have a relatively young team of researchers in UMBI, but a good number of them have already made a strong impact both in publications and citations. UMBI continues to seek new talent to be part of the team.

Established as a centre of excellence focusing on research in molecular medicine, the diseases studied in UMBI include various types of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and infectious diseases. UMBI is recognized as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in 2008, and spearheaded The Malaysian Cohort Project, the largest prospective cohort project in Malaysia to identify risk factors and biomarkers for various diseases.

UMBI offers a conducive environment for the students to perform high-impact research. Our laboratories are equipped with high-end instruments to support the research activities in molecular medicine, and our academicians are highly qualified and possess specific skill and expertise to mentor the new intake of students.
