Synopsis

Academics are pillars of the educational endeavour and the agents of knowledge discovery and dissemination. Some academics purely conduct research; others busy themselves solely with teaching. Now all academics are expected to balance both teaching and research – the hybrids. In this lecture, Prof Bohari will discuss plans for research project for career establishment. Additionally, Prof Bohari would also guide students how to disseminate knowledge via publication in high impact journals. Prof Bohari stresses the role academicians in institutional building, national development and committed to pursuit the truth in learning.

“Academics are considered influential by their quantity of publications and also the fact that their work is frequently cited by others. The popular notion is that if one’s work is not cited by others, the research is not attractive enough or has not produced new knowledge, thus having less impact.”

Prof. Dr. Bohari M. Yamin

Born in Jan 1950 in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. He graduated with Bachelor of Science in Chemistry & Mathematic from university of Malaya in 1973/74. In 1977 he obtained his PhD from Kings College, London University and his thesis title was ‘kinetic studies of olefin oxidation by palladium(II) catalysis. He then became a lecturer in June 1977. In the 70s it was a difficult time and really struggled to plan and established a research project for an academic career. Nevertheless, two sabbatical leaves in 1984 at Essex university and Oxford university in 1989/90 working on a very air sensitive compounds as Commonwealth University Fellow have given him sufficient experience to venture into the world of chemical synthesis. The experience working with very air sensitive metallic compounds at Malcolm Greens Lab in Oxford has given him further opportunity to work during semester break at Kyoto university several times by invitation. Learning chemical crystallography a useful technique for molecular structural study had a great impact not only in research but also research collaboration and publications. He has put UKM and Malaysia on the world publication map on the discovery of many types of compounds especially thiourea derivatives and metal complexes. He retired in Jan 2006 but continued to guide the young lecturers and postgraduate students till today. His contribution to academic world is very obvious not only in Malaysia but also to other countries in the region including Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Indonesia. He will share his experiences in establishing research career and long term networking in the coming presentation.
