Smart Material and Sustainable Product Innovation (SMatSPIn), UKM Research Group
On 21st January 2026, the Smart Material and Sustainable Product Innovation (SMatSPIn) research group under the Kumpulan Penyelidikan Universiti (KPU) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) successfully convened today for its annual strategic review. The session focused on celebrating the group’s robust milestones from 2025, mapping out ambitious targets for the remainder of 2026, and announcing a significant transition in its leadership.
The discussion kicked off with a retrospective look at a stellar 2025, a year where SMatSPin solidified its position as a premier hub for cutting-edge sustainable engineering. The group celebrated a remarkable surge in high-impact, peer-reviewed publications and patents focusing on advanced biomass valorization and polymer matrices. In addition to securing vital strategic grants to drive green technology solutions, the team successfully expanded its industry footprint by translating bench-scale academic research into viable, real-world green products.
Looking forward, the group outlined a comprehensive roadmap for its ongoing 2026 work, steering several high-stakes projects designed to push the boundaries of materials science. Current initiatives are heavily focused on developing next-generation electrospun membranes for specialized electronic and environmental applications, alongside accelerating the synthesis of bio-based composites to support circular economy initiatives. Through these efforts, SMatSPin aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research frameworks within UKM while actively boosting its international research networks.
The most pivotal milestone of the meeting was the official announcement of a leadership transition set for the coming months. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shaiful Sajab has been appointed as the new Head of the SMatSPin research group, effective June 2026. An expert in chemical and process engineering known for his innovative work in biomass utilization and advanced materials, Dr. Mohd Shaiful will be taking over the mantle from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Masturah Markom. The entire SMatSPin team expressed their deepest gratitude to Dr. Masturah for her visionary guidance and dedication, which built the incredible foundation that has allowed the group to reach unprecedented academic and administrative heights.
Accepting the appointment, Dr. Mohd Shaiful shared his enthusiasm for the group’s trajectory, emphasizing a commitment to driving research commercialization, empowering the next generation of researchers, and maintaining UKM’s excellence in sustainable technological innovation. With the strong foundations laid in 2025 and a clear, innovative path forged for 2026, SMatSPin enters this new chapter poised to make an even greater impact on the global scientific stage.
