Improving Malaysian HE Knowledge towards a Wood and Furniture Industry 4.0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2018 to 2022, our team had the honour of participating in a significant international project aimed at modernising Malaysia\u2019s wood and furniture industry by enhancing higher education and integrating Industry 4.0 technologies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coordinated by Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Cartagena (UPCT) and led by Dr. Maria Victoria Bueno Delgado, the project involved a strategic collaboration between European and Malaysian universities, technological centres, and industry partners. Malaysia was proudly represented by UKM through the involvement of Prof. Dr. Sarani Zakaria, alongside other local institutions such as UPM, UiTM, and USM. Industry participation was represented by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB). The project focused on addressing key challenges faced by the Malaysian furniture sector, which, despite being the largest contributor to the country\u2019s wood-based economy, still relies heavily on conventional processing methods and an unskilled labour force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support the industry’s digital transformation, the consortium worked on developing a joint curriculum, training materials, and skills enhancement programs aligned with Industry 4.0 needs. European partners contributed according to their areas of expertise\u2014UPCT in IoT and sensorization, WULS in wood and furniture technologies, KIT in additive manufacturing and augmented reality, and CETEM in robotics, surveillance, and circular economy practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This joint effort not only fostered innovation and international collaboration but also laid the groundwork for a sustainable and digitally capable workforce in Malaysia. The project successfully bridged gaps between academia and industry, promoted creativity, and supported the internationalisation of higher education in the wood and furniture sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
