BACKGROUND
The Sustainability Challenge 2025, the sixth series of this prestigious competition, is set to take place on December 8, 2025, organized by the Research Centre for Sustainable Process Technology (CESPRO). This event is aimed at exploring and developing innovative ideas in sustainability, building upon the success of previous competitions held on November 18, 2015, November 29, 2017, December 12, 2019, and most recently, December 16, 2021 and 23 November 2023 by CESPRO UKM and the UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability.
This year, Sustainability Challenge, themed “ Advancing Towards Decarbonization for Sustainable Future,” will be open to applicants from higher educational institutions and professionals, either individually or as a team. The competition will consist of two main categories, and during the preliminary stage, participants will need to submit a 3-page extended abstract, which includes an introduction, problem statement, method, results/outcome, and references, as well as a poster.
The top finalists will have the opportunity to submit a 3-minute video and present their ideas in front of a Grand Jury on December 2, 2025, where they will need to deliver a final pitch. The top three winners and consolation winners in both the student and professional categories will receive cash prizes.
The Sustainability Challenge 2025 offers an exciting platform for individuals and teams to showcase their innovative ideas in sustainability and circular process solutions. It promises to be an engaging and insightful event that will bring together individuals passionate about making a positive impact on the environment and communities. Objectives
The competition aims:
- Explore and develop innovative ideas and inventions related to sustainability among UKM students and students from various higher learning institutions.
- Provide a platform for sustainability initiatives or practices towards sustainable circular process solutions by considering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations for the development and well-being of local communities.
- Provide a platform for local and international researchers, academia and industries to share their latest findings that can benefit the community.
- Establish a network of collaboration between researchers and local and international stakeholders, and to encourage knowledge-sharing initiatives between government agencies, public and private researchers to collectively achieve SDGs.
- Enhance the visibility of CESPRO in sustainable research and development at local and international levels.
