Abstract

Air quality study was conducted at five stations located at congested areas in Kajang Town, Selangor. Air pollutants parameter selected were SO2, NO2, CO, O3  gases and suspended particulate matter with diameter less than 10-micrometer (PM10) and its anions  (SO42- and NO3-), cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) and heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Fe, Zn and Cd) composition. Gases concentration were determined by colorimetric method after air was absorb into respective absorbing solution using air sampling pump equipped with flow rate meter for 1 hour. Determination of PM10   for 24 hours was conducted using low volume air sampler equipped with weighted fiberglass filter paper before and after sampling was done. Anions concentration was  determined  by  ultra  violet (UV)  spectrophotometer  after  filter paper  with  particulate matter was extracted with deionised water. Determination of heavy metals was conducted by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) after filter paper with particulate matter was extracted with mixture of nitric and perchloric acid. Results showed that the range of concentration for one hour SO2  (0.065 – 0.072 ppm), NO2 (0.026 - 0.060 ppm), CO (3.38 – 6.71 ppm) and O3  (0.017 – 0.028 ppm) gases still under permissible value recommended by Malaysian Department of Environment for respective gases which are 0.13 ppm, 0.17 ppm, 30 ppm and 0.1 ppm for the same sampling period. Average concentration of PM10  still at the range 29.17 to 37.03 µgm-3, far below the level recommended for 24 hours sampling which is 150 µgm-3. Sequence  of  PM10   composition determined was SO42- > Zn > NO3- > Fe > Pb, Ni > Cd suggested that engine combustion processes and soil dust were main contributor of PM10. The study also showed that the concentration of air pollutants in Kajang town were higher than the data collected at ASMA station about 4 kilometers from Kajang Town.
