Abstract

Mediators are widely used in the construction of redox enzyme electrodes for biosensors. Ferrocene and its derivatives have attracted much attention from researchers and they are the most widely used mediators. They have been used to replace oxygen as an electron acceptor for the oxidase enzymes. Mediators will not only increase the electron transfer rate between the enzyme active center and the electrode, but also reduce the undesirable overpotential, thus reduce the system potential and increase its selectivity. However, the major  problem  faced  in  the  entrapment  of  ferrocene  at  the  electrode  surface  is  the  leaching  of  the ferrocene-ferricinium into the bulk solution. As a preliminary study, the entrapment of ferrocene in methacrylate derived polymers and poly(HEMA) was carried out. The leaching of the entrapped ferrocene was also studied.
