Abstract

Preliminary characterisation on reaction between eriochrome cyanine R-aluminium (ECR-Al) or chrome azurol  S-aluminium (CAS-Al) complexes and fluoride ion was conducted by using UV-visible spectrophotometer. The  analytical results on the absorption spectra showed that both complexes were able to detect the presence of  fluoride ions. Other studies such as pH optimisation, calibration graph and reproducibility were also carried out  for both complexes. The reagent phases were prepared by adsorption of ECR-Al and CAS-Al complexes on XAD  2 co polymer which were later coupled to the distal end of bifurcated fibre. Stainless steel probe was immersed  in fluoride solution to produce chemical transduction system. The reflectance measurements of the immobilised  reagent, before and after reaction with analyte were conducted by using optical fibre spectrophotometer.
