PhD Candidate in Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (SEADPRI-UKM)

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate who will be involved in flood susceptibility and modeling component for Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding area. The candidate will initially be working largely on data collection, handling and processing of very large spatial datasets to form the basis of inputs for the 2D hydraulic flash flood modelling. The candidate will be funded by the Newton-Ungku Omar Research Fund which will provide greater opportunity to work with internationally recognize research groups as well as have good chances to go for higher level training abroad.

Requirements:

  1. The candidate is required to have a Bachelor or Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in at least one of the following disciplines (in order of descending priority):
  2. Urban Hydrology / Hydraulic Flood Modelling Techniques
  3. Physical Geography
  4. Geographic Information System (including knowledge of Remote Sensing)
  5. Meteorology
  6. Engineering
  7. Knowledge and experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) / ArcGIS / QGIS / ERDAS Imagine – the ability to use GIS software programs to manipulate and edit raster / vector datasets to derive maps, cleanse / validate data, and undertake necessary geo-processing.
  8. Knowledge and experience in Data Management / Microsoft SQL Server / Postgres / Access – download, manage, process large river, rainfall datasets.
  9. Able to write and converse well in English.
  10. Capacity to think and work independently and in a diverse group of scientists and engineers.
