Submissions

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to ensure that their submission complies with all of the following items. Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to the authors for revision.

  1. The manuscript is original, has not been published elsewhere, and is not under consideration by another journal. If this is not the case, a justification has been provided in the Comments to the Editor.
  2. The manuscript file is in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx). Click for template.
  3. The manuscript is written in either Malay or English, in Times New Roman, font size 10, single spacing, double-column and follows the formatting structure required by BSK.
  4. The manuscript does not exceed 12 pages (original article) or 6 pages (short communication, case report, or research note).
  5. An abstract in both Malay and English (150–250 words each) is included, regardless of the manuscript’s primary language.
  6. Three (3) to five (5) keywords are provided.
  7. All figures, charts, and tables are clearly labelled in the positions clearly marked within the text. All visuals are numbered in sequence and referenced in the manuscript.
  8. The manuscript uses author-date citation style, and all references follow a consistent format in line with The Chicago Manual of Style or UKM Publisher Guidelines. All cited works appear in the reference list, and vice versa.
  9. Any third-party materials (e.g., images, figures) have been used with written permission, or are from public domain/fair use sources. Proof of permission is attached if applicable.
  10. The author(s) agree to review the final proof and notify the editorial board of any required corrections before publication.

Author Guidelines

1. Scope of the Journal

BSK is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to advancing knowledge across all disciplines of health and medical sciences. The journal accepts articles in the following areas (but not limited to):

  • Audiology, Biochemistry, Dentistry, Dietetics
  • Medical Imaging, Biomedical Science, Medical Radiation
  • Nutrition, Optometry, Pharmacology, Pharmacy
  • Physiology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy
  • Forensic Science, Environmental Health, Public Health
  • Health Psychology, Speech Sciences, Sports Science

The journal publishes:

  • Original Research Articles
  • Short Communications
  • Case Reports
  • Research Notes

2. Language

Manuscripts may be submitted in Malay or English. Regardless of the manuscript language, all submissions must include abstracts in both Malay and English.

3. Manuscript Format

Title Page:

  • Manuscript title (not exceeding 15 words)
  • Full names and affiliations of all authors
  • Corresponding author’s contact information (email, phone, address)

Abstract and Keywords:

  • Abstract in both Malay and English, each between 150–250 words
  • Include 3 to 5 keywords in both Malay and English

Manuscript Structure:

  • Introduction
  • Materials and Methods
  • Results and Discussion (may be separated)
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgements (if any)
  • References

Tables and Figures:

  • Numbered in sequence (e.g., TABLE 1, FIGURE 1)
  • All figures, charts, and tables are clearly labelled in the positions clearly marked within the text.
  • All visuals are numbered in sequence and referenced in the manuscript.

4. References

Use the author–date citation style (e.g., Ahmad, 2020).

List all references alphabetically at the end of the manuscript.

Reference format must follow either:

Ensure consistency throughout. All cited sources must appear in the reference list and vice versa.

Copyright Notice

Authors are fully responsible for ensuring their work does not infringe any copyright laws. Any previously published materials (e.g., figures, images) must be accompanied by written permission from the copyright holder. Proof of permission must be submitted with the manuscript, or usage must clearly fall under fair use/public domain.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

The Bulletin of Health Sciences is committed to ensuring the privacy and security of all users interacting with the journal website and editorial system. Any personal information collected through the manuscript submission, peer review, or publication processes will be handled in accordance with applicable data protection laws and ethical publishing standards.

Specifically:

Personal information (e.g., names, institutional affiliations, contact information) provided by authors, reviewers, and editors will be used solely for editorial communication and publication-related purposes. Email addresses will not be shared, sold, or used for any commercial mailing list or unauthorised contact. All submitted manuscripts and reviewer comments are treated as confidential.

The journal may collect anonymised data for website analytics, but this does not include personally identifiable information. By submitting a manuscript or registering as a user, you consent to the collection and use of your information as outlined in this policy.

Ethics Statement

The BSK is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity. The journal follows the principles outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) to ensure ethical conduct by all parties involved in the publication process: authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher. The following policies outline our expectations and responsibilities.

  • The Responsibilities of Authors
    • Authors submitting to BSK are expected to:

      • Submit original and unpublished work that is not under consideration by any other journal.
      • Ensure that the work is free from plagiarism, data fabrication, and falsification.
      • Provide accurate and honest methodological and data reporting.
      • Disclose any conflicts of interest or funding sources that may influence the interpretation of results.
      • Acknowledge all contributors, collaborators, and cited work appropriately.
      • Obtain ethical approval from relevant committees for research involving human or animal subjects, and provide documentation if requested.
      • Include a statement of informed consent where applicable.
      • Promptly notify the editor if significant errors are discovered post-publication, and cooperate in issuing corrections or retractions as needed.
  • The Responsibilities of Editors
    • Editors of BSK are responsible for:

      • Ensuring a fair and unbiased review process, with decisions based solely on academic merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope.
      • Maintaining the confidentiality of all manuscripts and reviewer identities.
      • Taking prompt action in response to ethical concerns, complaints, or suspected misconduct.
      • Avoiding conflicts of interest in the handling of submissions.
      • Ensuring that peer review is double-blinded and that reviews are objective, constructive, and timely.
  •  The Responsibilities of Reviewers
    • Reviewers play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and integrity of BSK. They are expected to:

      • Provide objective, constructive, and timely evaluations of the manuscript.
      • Maintain confidentiality of the manuscript and do not use any content for personal or academic advantage.
      • Disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect the impartiality of the review.
      • Report any ethical issues, such as plagiarism or data concerns, to the editor.
      • Decline the review if they feel unqualified or unable to complete it on time.

Ethical Guidelines for Human Subjects Research

All studies involving human participants must:

  • Adhere to the Declaration of Helsinki or equivalent national ethical standards.
  • Obtain approval from an institutional ethics committee or review board, with the approval number clearly stated in the manuscript.
  • Include a statement confirming that informed consent was obtained from all participants, or from legal guardians where applicable.
  • Ensure that the dignity, rights, and privacy of all research participants are protected.

Failure to comply may result in rejection or retraction of the manuscript.

Plagiarism Policy

BSK maintains a zero-tolerance policy on plagiarism and research misconduct.

  • All submissions are screened using plagiarism detection software.
  • Plagiarism includes direct copying, inappropriate paraphrasing, self-plagiarism (duplicate publication), or failure to properly attribute sources.
  • If plagiarism is detected:
    • During submission: the manuscript will be rejected immediately.
    • Post-publication: the article will be retracted, and appropriate action will be taken against the author(s), including notification of their institution.
  • Authors are responsible for ensuring all work is properly cited and original.
  • All submissions must have a similarity index of less than 20%. Failure to comply may result in immediate rejection.
