Biomaterial is an engineered substance to mimic a three-dimensional of native tissue matrix, which, alone or as a part of a complex system, through direct or by control of interactions with components of living systems, in course of any therapeutic or diagnostic procedure. Functionalization includes the integration of various drug molecules, secretomes, vesicles, proteins via residue‐specific bioconjugation, such as antibodies for cellular targeting, organelle‐specific reagents to control intracellular trafficking, which emerged as strategies to improve therapeutic efficacy. Since 10 years ago, CTERM started with an autologous matrix such as fibrin before transform to allogeneic and xenogeneic biomaterial sources including ovine collagen type I, gelatin, poultry elastin, bacterial cellulose and many more. Functional biomaterial technology has a great potential emerged as an innovative and promising approach in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
