Abstract

Training plays an important role in raising workers’ productivity and wages. However, inequility in receiving training may cause workers’ wage differentials. There are differences in training opportunity between regions and they are very much dependent on the level of development of the different regions. A more developed region will attract larger companies that provide more training opportunities as compared to a less developed region. As a consequent, wage differentials prevail between regions as well as between urbans in that regions. This paper aims to analyse impact of training on workers’ level of wage and wage differentials by selected urbans in Malaysia. These urbans represent three different regions; Lembah Klang for the middle region; Johor Bahru for the south region and Pulau Pinang for the north region. Analysis is based on the data of 488 workers in the hotelling and information and communication technology (ICT) gathered in 2008/2009 using questionnaires. In this analysis, training programmes are divided into two categories; organised by the Human Resource Development Limited (HRDL) and not organised by the HRDL. The wage models are estimated using pooled sample and by urbans to identify wage determinants. Subsequently, multilateral wage differentials decomposition models are utilised to examine wage differentials for the selected urbans. Results show that HRDL training significantly affect workers’ wage level and wage differentials for Lembah Klang. However, the non-HRDL training significantly affect workers’ wages level for all selected urbans. Other variables that significantly affect urbans wage differetials are workers’ year of schooling, working experience and job categories.
