Siti Nor Azah binti Ayob (2020)

M Sc. In Plant Systematics was my first choice when I decided to pursue my study. As a course work mode, this programme offers a lot of subjects that allows me to understand well in all aspect from the fundamental to the latest practises in Plant Systematics. Some of my favourite subjects are Plant Micromorphology and Anatomy, Plant Diversity and Systematics and also Economic Botany and Ethnobotany. Apart from attending classes, doing presentations and completing assignments, I also enjoy doing research and writing thesis. The exposures I gathered while completing my research on the leaf anatomy of fern species had taught me to deal with research effectively. All the knowledge, experiences and networking that I gained throughout the studies has given me a new perspective to be implemented in my career as an Agriculture Officer. Thank you to all the lecturers for their dedication and UKM for offering the course.

Plant systematics is indeed a crucial element in the Biology world, especially in describing and explaining the findings behind every plant characterization. Excellent assistance from the lecturers and research officers with extensive knowledge and years of experience in the field of botany made the journey of my Master’s Degree possible and successful with uncountable great memories. One of the interesting parts is that most classes were either conducted hands-on or on the field according to the needs of the subject – very interactive and efficient! Worry not, lots of career and research opportunities are offered to Plant Systematics Graduates. Post-graduation, I became a research assistant at UKM. We worked on a project to identify plant and fern species abundance in Taman Paku Pakis, UKM in collaboration with the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources (KeTSA). Then, another joint venture with postgraduate students from UTM with a project related to the identification of samples and herbarium collections.
