ABSTRACT

The microbiological quality of raw milk from the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia was analyzed for the microbial status as well as the prevalence of selected emerging pathogens in local milk. The mean counts per ml for total plate, coliform and Escherichia coli were generally high for all samples collected from 127 dairy farms, with a range of 5.5 ´ 105 - 2.7 ´ 107/ml, 2.4 ´ 104-8.0 ´ 105/ml dan 3.5 x 103 - 4.6 x 104/ml respectively. Approximately 63% of milk samples were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus and 33% were E. coli 0157:H7 positive. Five serotypes of Salmonella were identified including S. agona, S. newport, S. heldelberg, S. typhimurium and S. weltevreden. Meanwhile 18 strains of Listeria spp. were isolated from 4.2% of the positive samples.
