Abstract

This paper discusses the methodological problem of selecting respondents to measure family role structure in decision to buy consumer goods and services. The research question focuses on the choice of selecting either the husband or the wife for purposes of measuring the role structure. Research data on decision to buy 30 consumer items were obtained from 868 respondents consisting of both husbands and wives. Chi-square analysis indicated that there was no significant difference in perception pertaining to the decision to buy five items; snacks, motorcycles, children’s clothes, toys and magazines. The implication is clear that it is methodologically sufficient to select either spouse to measure perception of purchase decision. For other items the selection of respondent is deemed critical.
