Abstract

An experiment was conducted to investigate the strategy and the process used by decision makers to solve Multi Criteria Decision Problems using a Decision Support System. In this experiment, subjects were given a task where they were required to obtain all the necessary information and used the information for evalution in the decision making process using a software developed specially for the experiment. Sixty-four university students volunteered as subject and they were asked to play the role of an admission officer of a university. The task was to assess twenty hypothetical profiles of candidates seeking admission to a university and to make decisions as to whether to accept or to reject the candidates. The research findings showed that (1) all data were not utilized for a decision-making task involving multiple criteria; (2) subjects actions on data acquisition were guided by their cognitive preference of the attributes; i.e., the attribute which was perceived as most important was accessed first followed by the next important attribute and so on; (3) the data acquisition direction was by attributes; and (4) there was no specific direction for the evaluation process.
