Abstract

Advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are among the biggest contributions in Malaysian economy especially in job opportunities. Although most of STEM graduates are women, their participation in STEM labor market is still low. Therefore, this study is conducted to identify types of working environment needed by women to join, sustain and lead the STEM. This study applies a qualitative method that is in-depth interviews with female respondents who join, sustain and lead STEM. Based on NVIVO analysis performed on the transcripts, two important findings were obtained which are women who join and sustain in STEM are affected by psychosocial, physical and working condition working environment while women who lead in STEM are affected by psychosocial and working condition working environment. This research found that private and government sector should provide good psychosocial, physical and working condition working environment to increase the number of women’s participation in STEM.
