Description:
The COVID-19 pandemic led to the temporary closure of most educational sectors including Islamic tertiary institutions. Aligned with the implementation of lockdown in most countries, emergency remote teaching for English was conducted in Islamic tertiary institutions. The shift to online teaching brings various challenges to English teachers in Islamic tertiary institutions in terms of technological skills, facilities and infrastructure, motivation, and evaluations. The focus of this book is to explore the challenges faced by the English teachers in IIUM and UIR in the teaching of English during ERT, the strategies they used and their suggestions to overcome the challenges. In this book, among the challenges faced by English teachers in the teaching of English in ERT were internet connection and infrastructure, lack of technological skills and motivation. To overcome the challenges, several strategies were implemented by English teachers and the English department which include using a suitable online platform for teaching, improving technological skills through peer learning and continuous training provided by the department. Among the suggestions from the teachers are to develop their technological skills and to increase student’s motivation to learn English. The findings in this book can provide an overview of aspects that need to be considered while planning and executing a meaningful online teaching of English.
