About MetaSkool

A Collaborative Metaverse Education Initiative

MetaSkool is a pioneering educational project jointly developed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Launched as a pilot in 2023, this three-year initiative aims to revolutionize traditional teaching and learning through metaverse integration.

By blending conventional classroom methods with immersive digital technology (mix of Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 tools), MetaSkool's vision is to create a new paradigm of learning that encourages hands-on engagement and self-directed exploration in Malaysian schools.

Students

MetaSkool is designed for school students (generally in the 13–17 age range). About 500 students from 9 pilot schools nationwide participated in MetaSkool's initial rollout.

Educators (Teachers)

A crucial audience for MetaSkool is school teachers, as they are the ones integrating the metaverse content into lessons. In the pilot, 9 teachers were selected as content creators and implementers for the program.

Schools and the Education Community

At the program level, MetaSkool's audience extends to entire schools (administrators and even parents) and the broader education community that is keen to modernize teaching methods.

Key Features and Program Activities

Operationalizing the vision of metaverse-based learning

Pilot Program

In its first year, MetaSkool rolled out a pilot that involved training sessions for teachers and immersive workshops for students.

Curriculum-Aligned World Creation

Teachers and content developers design metaverse "lessons" for various subjects that align with school curricula.

Design Learning Framework

UKM's Faculty of Education spearheaded the development of a pedagogical framework and learning modules for MetaSkool.
