The Ministry of Education supports MetaSkool as part of Malaysia's educational transformation initiatives, ensuring alignment with national education policies and curriculum standards.
MDEC is the lead agency driving MetaSkool under its MyDigitalMaker initiative. As the national ICT and digital economy agency, MDEC provides strategic direction, funding, and program management.
UKM's Faculty of Education is the strategic academic partner for MetaSkool. UKM experts act as pedagogy specialists — developing the learning framework and modules for the program — and lead an impact study to research MetaSkool's outcomes.
Preparing the next generation with digital-age skills
MetaSkool is designed for school students (generally in the 13–17 age range). About 500 students from 9 pilot schools nationwide participated in MetaSkool's initial rollout.
A crucial audience for MetaSkool is school teachers, as they are the ones integrating the metaverse content into lessons. In the pilot, 9 teachers were selected as content creators and implementers for the program.
At the program level, MetaSkool's audience extends to entire schools (administrators and even parents) and the broader education community that is keen to modernize teaching methods.
Operationalizing the vision of metaverse-based learning
In its first year, MetaSkool rolled out a pilot that involved training sessions for teachers and immersive workshops for students.
Teachers and content developers design metaverse "lessons" for various subjects that align with school curricula.
UKM's Faculty of Education spearheaded the development of a pedagogical framework and learning modules for MetaSkool.
MetaSkool deployed Spatial.io, a no-code metaverse creation SaaS platform, where virtual school environments are built.
