MetaSkool ToT @ SSTP JPN Kedah — Empowering Educators in the Metaverse
The Training of Trainers (ToT) programme began with a warm welcome from the Sektor Sumber dan Teknologi Pendidikan (SSTP), JPN Kedah. The session brought together a group of educators eager to explore new frontiers in digital learning. At the centre of the programme was MetaSkool, a metaverse education initiative introduced by MDEC in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Launched in 2023, the initiative aims to introduce immersive learning experiences into classrooms across the country, offering a fresh, interactive approach to teaching and learning.
Led by facilitators from the Faculty of Education at UKM, the training offered hands-on exposure to the MetaSkool platform, which is hosted on Spatial.io. Participants were introduced to the platform’s core features, explored the MetaSkool headquarters, and navigated the newly launched SSTP JPN Kedah HQ. These early sessions focused on building confidence in using the platform and imagining how virtual spaces could complement traditional teaching methods.
One of the more engaging parts of the programme was the world-building session. Each teacher was paired with two student participants. The teachers shared their ideas for how their metaverse lesson-worlds should look and feel, offering input on the content, structure, and educational goals. The students then turned these ideas into immersive digital environments, building out the virtual spaces using the tools they had learned. The process brought together the creative energy of both teachers and students, offering a glimpse into how co-creation could shape future learning experiences.
Participants were also guided through several existing immersive worlds, including MetaSkool HQ, Dead Town: EcoCity Quest, and Parameswara. These environments provided concrete examples of how the metaverse can support curriculum-driven storytelling, interactive exploration, and deep engagement with subject matter. Each space was designed with a clear educational purpose in mind, showing how immersive design can align with learning outcomes.
The MetaSkool ToT session at SSTP JPN Kedah marked a meaningful step forward in local education innovation. With teachers now equipped to design and lead in metaverse environments, the district is positioned to take the lead in future-ready education. The experience not only introduced new tools but also encouraged new ways of thinking about collaboration, creativity, and the possibilities of immersive technology in the Malaysian classroom.
