Junior School Enrichment Programme 2022

Introduction​

Pusat GENIUS@Pintar Negara or the Malaysian National Gifted Center, located within the Universiti Kebangsaan Campus, o­ffers Junior School Enrichment Programs (JSEP). At the beginning of its inception, the center only o­ffers the Junior Enrichment Programs (JSEP) for Malaysian gifted and talented students. These programs were developed to meet the learning needs for students and to enrich their learning experiences particularly in STEM.

Our Junior School Enrichment Programs (JSEP) helps students to develop their potential and become critical thinkers who are creative and active in innovative activities. It also provides holistic learning experiences where students can explore academic programs beyond the school curriculum. It off­ers opportunity for students to network with each other and provides learning activities that will challenge the students’ cognitive capabilities. Students will be provided with psychological support throughout the learning experiences. Our Camp allows students to experience 3-daily fun learning enrichment STEM-based activities.

This year, JSEP programme has extending into two series where Malaysian students can experience the camp during the school holiday, in May and November. Students are allowed to choose only one course off­ered in each series or both series based on their age group. They will participate in the course activities for 3 days. They will be guided by instructors and teaching assistants throughout the camp. The students will also be assigned teaching assistants who will help them adjust to the camp routines. The camp has very low teacher to student’s ratio (1:5). The low ratio enables teachers and teaching assistants to give more attention to each student. The academic activities will involve lectures, small group discussions, lab work, student’s presentations, visits to labs and research institutes, and listening to talks conducted by experts. The academic activities are scheduled from 8.00 am until 5.00 pm.

Students will stay at the Pusat GENIUS@Pintar campus. Special meals can be prepared (eg. Vegetarian food) for students upon request. For security reason, students are not encouraged to bring their own laptop. However, students are allowed to bring their handset but with limited usage.

Our Courses

Be
a Scientist

This course provides an early exposure and fundamental knowledge about science. The 3-days module course is well planned, constructed and created to boost students’ interest in science. Students will be introduced about the key attributes of scientist and scientific methods during the first day of class, so that they will be able to follow the learning journey by understanding about one of the nature of the science. They will then be introduced about the human respiratory system. Students also will be exposed to the science of air resistance focusing on parachute. Finally, this course provide an opportunity to the students to understand the nature of work of a scientist. Throughout this 3-days learning journey, students will be able to experience new learning processes and pedagogy, such as pre- and post-test, think-pair-share, group discussion, individual and group presentation, daily hands-on activities, laboratory works, report writing and presentation!

Intoduction to Robotics

This course is designed to provide participants with vital information in the field of robotics as well as to improve their competitiveness in related sectors. This training covers both theoretical and practical topics. Participants will be exposed to the many types of robots, robot parts, robotics laws and morals, robotics professions, and challenges and solutions to upcoming concerns in the field of robotics as part of the hypothesis. The practical section is meant to provide participants with basic knowledge on how to construct and programed robots in order to pique their curiosity. Participants will be exposed to the fundamentals of electronics, electronic components, basic circuit construction, and electronic circuit programming. Participants will also construct and programed a rudimentary robot. To fortify the participants' understanding, participants are expected to perform unique errands that are not set in stone to test and examine the robots and programming that have been assembled.

Automotive Club

Automotive is one of the largest industries in the world. In order to achieve optimum efficiency, automotive design and manufacturing play an important role. Automotive sector including design, powertrain, high speed and performance. In order to nurturing young engineer talent, STEM competition base on Formula 1 competition have been introduced worldwide. In this course, an automotive design and engineering base on F1 in Schools competition in order to encourages participants to explore all areas of the curriculum whilst designing, making testing and racing a miniature car powered by compressed air. Participants then use their understanding of the science of speed to design an efficient bodyshell. Series of testing and modifying of designs is needed to finally produce best miniature car that will be test base on fastest speed and engineering knowledge.

Young
Doctors

This course provides an early exposure and fundamental knowledge about human biology and medical terms. These 3-days learning journey cover few interesting human systems like system of digestive, blood circulatory, and musculoskeletal and with addition of human diseases related to the systems learned. In the beginning of the module, students will be introduced to the concept of cell structure and cell organisation, along with the skills of microscope handling. Eventually, they will dive in deeper to the beauty of human organs like stomach, intestines, heart, skeleton, muscles and many more. Other than that, activities and questions invented for the students are challenging and definitely fun for them!

Mathematic is Fun

Astrokids

This course was designed to provide students with the opportunities to discover and understand astronomy and astrophysics through both theoretical and practical/observational approaches. Throughout the course, the student will be exposed to the fundamental knowledge of celestial objects and how astronomers or astrophysicists observed and obtained the data. Students can also experience how astronomers and astrophysicists work through student projects which require them to utilize the skills they have learned. At the end of the course, students not only learn in-depth about stars but they can also experience how scientists or astrophysicists work firsthand.

Introduction to DNA Barcoding

This course was designed to provide students to exposed to DNA Barcoding tool, to identify the species of insects. Students were allowed to catch their insect of interest from the school compound as a sample of their research. Students got chance to extract the insect’s DNA, multiply the DNA through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique and detection of their DNA through gel electrophoresis.
