Etnokosmologi/
Ethnocosmology

Each individual lives and dies underneath the night sky. Since our first appearance on this planet nearly 8000 years ago, humankind has only begun to venture into outer space approximately 60 years ago. Prior to the 1960s, our appreciation of the night sky has relied upon detecting and collecting electromagnetic signals from outer space, firstly through our own eyes, then the optical telescopes, and most recently, non-optical telescopes. Therefore, the rapid progress in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology in the past few decades is but the latest episode in the long drama of humankind’s fascination with the night sky. This course aims to trace the origins and growth of humankind’s relationship with the night sky. Equipped with basic knowledge and skills in history, anthropology, and astronomy, students will excavate and identify the contributions by different cultures towards modern astronomy, then compare the various factors that promoted the development of astronomy in each civilization, so that they may realize the extent to which universal, humanistic values are embedded in astronomy. Students will be trained to investigate clues of significant astronomical events in the histories of different civilizations, to analyze and interpret historical artifacts, and to perform historical reconstructions of events in past societies shaped by astronomical phenomena. At the end of this course, students will recognize the long and rich histories of astronomy, the night sky as a cultural heritage, and the broader, trans-scientific role and value of astronomy in human civilization.

Pemikiran Matematik/
Mathematical Thinking

The goal of the course is to help students develop a valuable mental ability – a powerful way of thinking in making any decision related to mathematical knowledge in solving daily life problems. Mathematical thinking is not the same as doing mathematics or not as mathematics is typically presented in our school system. Mathematics taught in schools focuses more on highly stereotyped problems. Professional mathematicians think a certain way to solve real problems, problems that can arise from the everyday world, or from science, or from within mathematics itself. The key to success in school mathematics is to learn to think inside the box. In contrast, a key feature of mathematical thinking is thinking outside the box. Today, this is a valuable ability that student need in their real life. At the end, this course will help student to develop such kind of crucial way of thinking in solving real life problems.

This course will develop self-awareness among pupils that reasoning is an important basis for understanding mathematics more effectively and meaningfully. Pupils will realize development of mathematical reasoning is closely related to their intellectual development and communication. This course required pupils to do mathematics and be actively involved in discussing mathematical ideas. The elements of reasoning in this course prevent pupils from considering mathematics as just a set of procedures or algorithms that should be followed to obtain a solution without understanding the actual mathematical concepts in depth. Reasoning not only changes the paradigm of pupils’ conscious procedural knowledge but also gives thought and intellectual empowerment when pupils are guided and trained to make and validate conjectures, provide logical explanations, analyze, evaluate and justify the mathematical activities. Such training would enhance pupils’ confidence and courage, in line with the aim of developing powerful mathematical thinkers.
