Tribute to Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen

We, at Tun Fatimah Hashim Women’s Leadership Centre (TFHWLC), are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen, one of Penang’s most influential politicians. Datuk Kee, who was in politics for 23 years and had numerous achievements to her credit, served four terms as the Batu Uban assemblyman, and was in the state’s culture, arts, tourism and women development committee for more than a decade. Upon retirement, Datuk Kee was appointed as the head of the Penang Tourism Action Council. As a tenacious woman leader herself, Datuk Kee who was the Wanita Gerakan chief from 1985-2002, played an instrumental role in advocating women’s rights and once served as a Deputy President of the National Council of Women’s Organisations (NCWO). She was referred to as the ‘Iron Lady of Penang’ and known for her outspoken and fearless ways; traits which she used effectively to stand up for women with utmost integrity and honesty throughout her political career. Her active presence and contributions to Malaysian women will be greatly missed. Datuk Kee leaves behind her husband and two children.
