BANGI, 12 July 2026 – The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way organisations operate while raising important questions on ethics, governance and responsible adoption.

Speaking at the opening of the 12th International Management and Accounting Conference (IMAC 12), Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Sufian Jusoh, said AI has created immense opportunities for innovation, but its benefits must be balanced with sound governance and public trust.

He stressed that AI should not only drive technological advancement but also contribute to broader economic participation while addressing ethical, legal and regulatory challenges.

“AI has become an integral part of our daily lives, but we must ensure its development and application are guided by responsible governance.

“Disciplines such as law have an important role in addressing ethical issues and establishing appropriate regulatory frameworks to ensure AI serves the interests of society,” he said.

Prof. Sufian also urged the public to use AI responsibly, noting that many users now rely on AI-generated content as a primary source of information without verifying its accuracy.

“AI systems remain susceptible to generating inaccurate or misleading information. Users must therefore exercise critical judgement and verify information before accepting it as fact,” he added.

He also raised concerns over the growing challenges of personal data protection as increasing amounts of user data are shared across digital platforms each day.

According to him, stronger data governance frameworks are essential to safeguard personal information and mitigate risks such as data breaches, misuse and online fraud.

Prof. Sufian expressed hope that IMAC 12 would serve as a platform for scholars to deepen discussions on AI innovation, examining both its opportunities and challenges while contributing evidence-based solutions for the future.

Organised by the Faculty of Economics and Management, the conference carries the theme “Innovation Capital in the AI Era: Opportunities, Risks and Ethical Boundaries.”

IMAC 2026 brought together researchers, academics and professionals from various institutions and countries to exchange ideas, research findings and perspectives in addressing the challenges of the AI era.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FEP and Cardiff Business School to establish strategic collaboration in academic and research areas.
