BACKGROUND

The Department of Biochemistry is a preclinical department established in 1972 with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine. At the beginning of its establishment, the Department of Biochemistry was located at Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur or known as UKM KL Campus after the permanent building of the Faculty was fully completed in 1977.

In July 2014, all preclinical departments including the Biochemistry Department were moved to the Pre-Clinical Building next to Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor’s Hospital, UKM Medical Center, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The Biochemistry Department office is located on the 17th Floor while the Biochemistry Department laboratory is located on the 11th Floor of the Pre-Clinical Building.

The Department of Biochemistry offers a curriculum covering basic aspects and applications of biochemistry such as carbohydrate metabolism, lipid proteins and nucleic acids, enzymology and molecular biochemistry. The lecturers of the Department of Biochemistry are involved in teaching for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Dentistry and Bachelor of Pharmacy programs.

The department also offers programs at the Master’s level, namely Master of Medical Science (Biochemistry) by coursework and research as well as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) under the supervision of lecturers in various fields and specialties. Graduates from the Department of Biochemistry have employment opportunities such as lecturers, research officers in the government and private sectors and have the opportunity to work in industrial sectors such as biomedical, pharmaceutical, food, and even biotechnology.
