Master of Islamic Studies Program


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An individual who wishes to apply for the master program must have the following qualifications :

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Studies with a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) or any other institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Studies, along with other qualifications or experience recognized by the Senate; or
  3. Candidates without formal qualifications or work experience in the field of Islamic Studies but who are interested in conducting interdisciplinary research involving Islamic Studies must undertake the appropriate prerequisite courses and achieve the minimum CGPA set by the Program; and
  4. Fulfill other requirements stipulated by the program (if applicable); and
  5. Meet the requirements set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); and
  6. Fulfill language proficiency requirements.

Local Graduates (using CGPA system):

  • Minimum CGPA of 2.75; OR

  • CGPA between 2.50 and 2.74, subject to internal evaluation by the Faculty Committee.

International Graduates (using CGPA system):

  • Minimum CGPA of 2.75; OR

  • CGPA between 2.50 and 2.74, subject to internal evaluation by the Faculty Committee.

International Graduates (not using CGPA system):

  • Minimum of Maqbul (Pass) (45%–54%).

Malaysian and Southeast Asian Students:

  • Minimum 60%; OR

  • 55% with three years of relevant work experience; OR

  • 55% with a rigorous internal evaluation.

Middle Eastern Students:

  • Minimum 60%.

Graduates from Morocco/Iran (Malaysian Students):

  • Minimum 10/20, equivalent to a CGPA of 2.75.

Graduates from Shubra (non-CGPA system):

  • Minimum of Jayyid (55%–69%); OR

  • 54% with three years of relevant work experience.


LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Malay Language – International candidates are required to enroll in a Malay Language course (3 credit hours) as stipulated by the University.
    Exemptions may be granted to candidates who have completed a Malay Language course offered by an institution recognized by the University Senate.
  • Arabic Language – All students are required to take the Academic Arabic Language Module (KEMBAA) as part of the Academic Arabic Language course (PPPZ6033).
    Exemptions will be granted to candidates whose official language is Arabic or who have undergone education with Arabic as the medium of instruction.
  • English Language
    International students must fulfill the English language proficiency requirement by achieving a minimum score or band in any of the following recognized examinations, based on the equivalency table:
    • HEET: 5 (Low)

    • TOEFL iBT: 31–45

    • IELTS: 4.0

    • MUET: Level 2.0 (Band 2.0)

The examination result must be submitted at the time of application.

International students who do not meet the English language competency requirement may still be allowed to pursue their studies subject to the following conditions:

    • They are permitted to enroll in the University’s Internal English Preparatory Course during their period of study, in accordance with the current regulations enforced by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. The student will be issued a conditional offer letter for the academic program; and

    • They must sit for IELTS, TOEFL, MUET, HEET, or any CEFR-aligned examination in order to fulfill the English language graduation requirement.

    • The list of CEFR-aligned examinations is subject to periodic Senate approval.

Faculties may grant exemptions to international candidates who:

    • Hold academic qualifications awarded by any Malaysian university recognized by the Senate; or

    • Originate from countries where English is the official language, or hold academic qualifications awarded by institutions that use English as the medium of instruction.

    • Candidates who are exempted from the English language entry requirement must still sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT). If they fail to meet the required proficiency level determined by the program, they are required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).
    • Exemption from the English language requirement is granted to Nusantara students from Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and Southern Thailand, provided they are enrolled in programs conducted in languages that are linguistically related to Malay.
