Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An individual who wishes to apply for the doctoral program must have the following qualifications :

  1. A Master’s degree from a university or any higher education institution recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or accredited by an internationally recognized accreditation body, or an institution with accreditation as specified by the program; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree or other qualifications with experience recognized by the Senate; or
  3. A student currently enrolled in a full-time research-based Master’s program at the university and recommended by the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Committee to transfer to the doctoral program with the Dean’s approval; or
  4. A Bachelor’s degree with excellent results from a university or any higher education institution, subject to the Faculty/Institute’s requirements, and recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or accredited by an internationally recognized accreditation body; or
  5. Other qualifications recognized by the Senate, obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
  6. Meet the requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); atau
  7. Candidates WITHOUT qualifications or work experience in the field of Islamic Studies, but interested in conducting interdisciplinary research with the field of Islamic Studies, must take the appropriate prerequisite courses and meet the minimum requirements set by the program; and
  8. Meet any other requirements set by the program (if applicable); and
  9. Meet the language requirements.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Malay Language – International candidates are required to take a Malay language course (3 credits) as stipulated by the university. Exemption may be granted to candidates who have completed a Malay language course conducted by an institution recognized by the University’s Senate.
  2. English Language
    • PInternational students are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements, which include achieving the minimum score or band as specified in the equivalency table: HEET (5 Low), TOEFL iBT (31-45), IELTS (4.0), or MUET Level 2.0 (Band 2.0). The exam results must be submitted when applying for admission; or
    • International students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements may pursue their studies subject to the following conditions:
      1. They are allowed to take the internal English Preparation Course at UKM throughout their study period, subject to the regulations of the Malaysian Immigration Department that are in force. Students will be issued an offer letter to follow the study program; and
      2. International students who take the internal English Preparation Course must sit for the IELTS, TOEFL, MUET, HEET, or any exam aligned with the CEFR to meet the English graduation requirements.
      3. The list of exams aligned with the CEFR is subject to the list approved by the Senate from time to time.
    • The faculty may grant exemptions for international candidates who:
      1. Have academic qualifications obtained from any local university recognized by the Senate; or
      2. Come from a country where English is the official language, or the candidate holds academic qualifications obtained from any higher education institution that uses English as the medium of instruction.
      3. Candidates may be exempted from the English language proficiency requirement, but they must take the English Proficiency Test (EPT). If the candidate fails to achieve the level set by the program, they will be required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).
      4. Exemption from the English language requirement is given to students from the Nusantara region, including Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and Southern Thailand, who are enrolled in programs using languages related to Malay.
