BET and Surface Area Workshop Series II 2025
Following the success of the first BET and Surface Area Workshop Series in 2024, the Department of Chemical Sciences once again organized the Series II Workshop, successfully held on 12 November 2025. The workshop was led by Dr. Nurul Asikin Mijan, who also served as one of the main speakers, together with Mr. Syawal and Mr. Chan from Micromeritics.
The event was limited to 35 participants to ensure effective engagement and personalized guidance during the hands-on session. Participants came from both national and international institutions, including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Petronas, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), and Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), Indonesia.
The workshop focused on the theory and practical applications of surface area and porosity determination, highlighting four major analytical approaches:
• Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for specific surface area measurement
• Barrett–Joyner–Halenda (BJH) method for pore size distribution analysis
• t-Plot analysis for distinguishing micro- and mesoporous structures
• Density Functional Theory (DFT) method for advanced pore structure modeling
In addition to theoretical lectures, participants engaged in a hands-on practical session, involving data acquisition, plotting, and interpretation using real experimental datasets.
The outcome of the workshop was highly positive — participants developed a stronger understanding of surface area and porosity characterization, enhanced their skills in analyzing and interpreting adsorption–desorption isotherms, and gained confidence in applying BET, BJH, t-Plot, and DFT techniques in their respective research fields.
The workshop also provided a valuable platform for networking and fostering collaborations between Malaysian and Indonesian researchers, further strengthening academic and research partnerships in material characterization and catalysis.
