Developing Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Learning Box (My-SPO Learning Box) for Secondary School Science Education

Grant Category, Year:  Small Research Grant, 2022

Abstract

Malaysia is one of the world's main producers of palm oil. Despite its critical significance in supporting the country’s growth, the social, economic and health benefits of the palm oil are not explicitly translated in Malaysia’s formal education framework. On that note, Malaysia should systematically strategise a counter act solution through our national education system in which the integration of palm oil knowledge should be introduced in the core subjects to encourage the students’ engagement in this matter. Furthermore, if knowledge and awareness are to have value, the integrated palm oil curriculum must lead the student not only to a knowledge of the world for its own sake but also to an understanding of palm oil industry which can be applied in the real world (Che Md Ghazali, 2016). In this light, learning boxes have recently attracted a lot of attention as a fun enrichment educational resource that may both stimulate learners’ interest and curiosity while also scaffloding their comprehension in a positive inquiry-based learning environment. Taking into account the strength of learning box to promote active engagement and critical thinking among learners, the objective of this project is to develop Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Learning Box (MY-SPO Learning Box) which comprises of a teaching module and toolkits on sustainable palm oil. This project will adopt a modified ADDIE framework to develop the teaching module and toolkits. This learning box will be produced in physical form in addition to being made freely available online via the Faculty of Education, UKM website portal for wide distribution in order to support its long-term use.
