Citra UKM Student Practical Session 2026

The Citra UKM Practical Session 2026 entitled “DNA Extraction and Polymerase Chain Reaction–Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP)” was successfully held on 3 June 2026 at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The programme was designed to provide Citra UKM students with practical exposure to molecular biology techniques and their applications in biomedical research and genetic analysis.

The session commenced with the arrival of students from UKM Bangi, who were divided into six groups. During the first practical session, Groups 1, 2, and 3 attended the DNA Extraction module at Level 8, while Groups 4, 5, and 6 participated in the PCR-RFLP practical at Level 11. The PCR-RFLP practical comprised three stations covering PCR and RFLP techniques, agarose gel electrophoresis, and DNA visualization using a Gel Documentation (Gel Doc) system. Following a scheduled rotation, all groups were given the opportunity to experience both practical modules.

Through hands-on laboratory activities, participants learned the principles of DNA isolation, amplification, restriction enzyme digestion, and DNA fragment analysis. These techniques are widely used in genetics, molecular diagnostics, and biomedical research. The programme concluded with a discussion session at MPG 12, led by Prof. Dr. Suzana Makpol, where students reflected on their learning experiences and gained further insights into molecular biology research.

Overall, the programme successfully enhanced students’ understanding of molecular techniques, strengthened their laboratory skills, and provided valuable experiential learning beyond the classroom environment.
