This study addresses the problem that without the existence of flouting a maxim in conversation, it could lead to boring and dull conversation, misunderstanding, and threatening a person’s face following Grice’s Cooperative Principle theoretical framework. The aim of this research is to analyze the application of maxim flouting through Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle the movie (dubbed version) directed by Hayao Miyazaki a famous and renowned Japanese animation filmmaker. The theoretical framework used in this research is Grice’s Cooperative Principle or also known as Grice’s Maxim (1975) focusing specifically on the many forms of flouting of maxim in the movie done by the characters. This research opted for a qualitative and quantitative approach where a qualitative method is used to analyze the type of application of maxim flouting in the movie and quantitative approach is used when collecting the data frequencies of each maxims. The data are presented in a table and this study uses the non-participatory method to gain the data as there were no participants involved. Thus, for this research, the observation method is chosen to be conducted through watching and analysing the movie’s script. The findings and discussion are also discussed in the latter part of this research paper.
