4 November 2025The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has achieved another significant milestone by signing a Research Agreement worth RM24,000 with Moirai Tech Sdn. Bhd.

The project, led by Associate Professor Dr. Aida Hani Mohd Kalok, a lecturer and specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the UKM Faculty of Medicine and the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a predictive modelling system aimed at enhancing the safety of women’s care throughout the childbirth process.

This initiative is expected to reduce the risk of delivery complications and the need for medical interventions, thereby providing direct benefits to both mothers and infants. This strategic collaboration reflects the industry’s confidence in UKM’s scientific and clinical capabilities, particularly through the synergy between the Faculty of Medicine and HCTM. It also opens avenues for new discoveries and impactful long-term partnerships.

Sincere appreciation goes to Moirai Tech for their commitment and support, and congratulations to Associate Professor Dr. Aida Hani and her research team for their unwavering dedication. 19th September 2025The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), represented by Associate Professor Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, Deputy Dean of Industry Network and Community, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Brill International at Komune Living & Wellness Hotel, Cheras.

This strategic collaboration opens new avenues to strengthen academic relations, expand research initiatives, and enhance scholarly publications at the global level.
The ceremony was held in conjunction with the Ocular Emergency Masterclass 2025, which brought together local ophthalmology experts to share their knowledge and experience in managing ocular emergencies.

Congratulations to all involved, especially Associate Professor Dr. Wan Haslina Wan Abdul Halim and her research team, for their unwavering dedication and commitment. It is hoped that this initiative will bring meaningful benefits to society and the medical community as a whole.

7th August 2025The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) continues to strengthen its role as a leader in medical research and education with a RM5 million contribution from the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF). This strategic fund will be utilised to establish the Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah Chair of Excellence, which will serve as a platform for advancing knowledge, research, and comprehensive community-based health initiatives. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony between UKM and JCF was held on 7 August 2025 at the Auditorium of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM). The MoA was signed by UKM Vice-Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Dr. Sufian Jusoh, and JCF Trustee, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman Hashim, witnessed by Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the UKM Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Raja Affendi Raja Ali, Dean of Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School. The historic event was also graced by YAM Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin, Trustee of JCF and Royal Fellow of UKM, Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Trustee of JCF as well as Chancellor of Sunway University, alongside senior officials from UKM, JCF, and Sunway University.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Sufian highlighted that this collaboration would open new avenues to enhance research, teaching quality, and community engagement at the Faculty of Medicine, UKM. “This initiative not only positions the Faculty of Medicine, UKM as a centre of excellence in medicine and public health in the country, but also strengthens the university’s role in advancing the global health agenda,” he stated. The Chair of Excellence will enable the appointment of a distinguished scholar to lead transdisciplinary research in medicine and public health while promoting closer collaboration between UKM and Sunway University. Key components of this initiative include joint research development, the establishment of incubation centres and high-tech research facilities, student and staff exchange programmes, international mobility, digital learning, scholarships, as well as workshops, lectures, short courses, and public publications for the benefit of the community.

Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah emphasised that UKM is the first public university in Malaysia to be awarded a Chair bearing his name. “The Faculty of Medicine, UKM has demonstrated an outstanding track record in research and public health development. I am confident that through this collaboration, we can expand the impact of higher education to benefit Malaysian society as a whole,” he remarked. The ceremony was further enriched by a special lecture delivered by Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah, which underscored the importance of integrating education and philanthropy in building a more competitive, knowledgeable, and compassionate society. With this initiative, the Faculty of Medicine, UKM not only reinforces its position as a leader in medical academia and research but also upholds UKM’s aspiration to be a globally impactful national university in addressing 21st-century challenges in public health and higher education.

20th June 2025The National University of Malaysia (UKM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Solace Asia Sdn. Bhd., a treatment center that integrates medical, psychiatric, physical, and spiritual approaches to addiction rehabilitation.

This collaboration is an initiative by the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, which has previously engaged in several research partnerships. To strengthen this cooperation, the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions was formalized. The coordinator for this document is Associate Professor Dr. Jayakumar Murthy.

The signing ceremony took place at Dewan Khalid Kadir, HCTM. UKM was represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, while Solace was represented by Adjunct Professor Dr. Prem Kumar Shanmugam, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Solace Group.

In her speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine warmly welcomed the collaboration, highlighting its contribution to the well-being of society, particularly in addressing addictions to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. Additionally, research projects related to addiction, such as the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and molecular studies on the effects of drugs on the heart and brain, will be conducted.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Dean of HEJIM, Associate Professor Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Datin Dr. Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahim, members of the Faculty of Medicine management, senior officers from Solace Asia Sdn.                                                          25th February 2025 The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) made history with the signing of a Research Agreement with B-Crobes Laboratory Sdn. Bhd. This collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening scientific research and health innovation for the benefit of society and the advancement of the medical field.

The signing ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Mohamad Nasir Shafiee, Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation), representing the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UKM; Prof. Lee Heng Yee, Executive Director of B-Crobes Laboratory Sdn. Bhd.; and Dr. Kaley Onn, Medical Director of B-Crobes Laboratory Sdn. Bhd. Also present were members of the UKM Faculty of Medicine’s management team and senior officers from both organizations, who witnessed this historic moment.

This research will be led by Prof. Dr. Norfilza Mokhtar from the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, UKM, focusing on the effectiveness of probiotics in treating inflammatory bowel disease. With the expertise and commitment of the research team, this collaboration has the potential to yield significant findings and innovative treatments in the clinical field.

This agreement is not just a formal collaboration but also a testament to UKM and B-Crobes’ commitment to advancing medical science and technology. May this initiative serve as a catalyst for more breakthroughs in health research, creating a positive impact worldwide.

2024

                            16th December 2024 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Arabian Gulf University (AGU), Bahrain, to initiate collaboration in education, research, and professional development. This partnership includes student and staff exchanges, as well as joint research initiatives to address global health challenges.

The MoU also focuses on strengthening the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through collaborative research and resource sharing, while expanding UKM’s international network in world-class research projects.

Additionally, this collaboration reinforces cultural ties between Malaysia and Bahrain and recognizes UKM’s expertise in medical sciences, including the appointment of Prof. Dr. Norfilza Mohd Mokhtar as an Adjunct Professor at AGU.

                            7th December 2024 –  The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Raffles University. This MoU was signed as an initiative to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical education. The primary objective of this collaboration is to enhance the quality of medical training, strengthen research, and produce more competent medical professionals through the integration of innovative technology.

By leveraging the synergy between UKM’s expertise in medical education and Raffles University’s proficiency in AI, this MoU is expected to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence technology in medical education. This initiative will benefit both medical educators and students, while also creating opportunities for joint research and academic collaboration between the two institutions.

The exchange of this MoU also demonstrates the commitment of both parties to empowering the adoption of cutting-edge technology in medical education. Furthermore, it paves the way for further collaboration in this field, which is expected to bring a positive impact on medical education at both the national and international levels.

                             3rd December 2024– Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Sinopharm International Corporation (Sinopharm International) at The Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, China. This collaboration aims to explore and develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in education, training, and hospital management. UKM was represented by Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International Affairs), while Sinopharm International was represented by Mr. Zhang Haoji, Vice President of Sinopharm.

The MoU focuses on five key areas: joint research, education, training, hospital management, and other areas of collaboration to be agreed upon in the future. This partnership is expected to significantly enhance the development and application of AI technology in the medical sector, leveraging the research excellence of UKM and technological expertise of Sinopharm International.

This strategic move not only strengthens UKM’s position as a leader in medical education innovation at the international level but also opens up broader opportunities for future strategic collaborations. It is hoped that this partnership will bring substantial benefits to students, medical professionals, and society as a whole through AI-driven advancements.

                            28th November 2024 – The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) Exchange Ceremony between the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), Universiti Malaya (UM), and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was held at Menara Binjai, Kuala Lumpur. This collaboration aims to strengthen medical education, particularly in the field of surgery, at an international level. The event marks a significant step in expanding medical education and research collaboration among the three institutions.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UKM, expressed his pride in this partnership. Also in attendance were Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, and representatives from Universiti Malaya. The RCSEd delegation was also present, including Prof. Dr. Grant McIntyre, Dean, and Rt Hon H.E Ian Murray, Secretary of State for Scotland.

                                     21st November 2024 –  The UKM Faculty of Medicine held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Fresenius Medical Care Sdn. Bhd. (FMC). This collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening ties between the two parties, with a primary focus on enhancing healthcare, particularly in nephrology and kidney care.

The ceremony was witnessed by Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Mr. Pradeep Ranjan, Managing Director of Southeast Asia Cluster 2, FMC. This partnership aims to create new opportunities for knowledge exchange, research, and clinical training in kidney disease treatment, as well as the integration of advanced technologies to improve patient care.

Also present at the event were UKM academic leaders, including Deputy Deans and Assistant Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, alongside FMC’s executive management team. Through this MoU, both parties hope to establish a productive collaboration across various research and professional training initiatives, ultimately benefiting patients in Malaysia.

                                                       6th November 2024– The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cotra Enterprises Sdn. Bhd to strengthen gut health research and public health advocacy in Malaysia. The MoU also marked the appointment of Prof. Dr. Norfilza Mohd Mokhtar as the official Medical Advisor for VITAGEN. The MoU document was signed by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani, UKM Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, and Mr. Poh Eng Lip, General Manager of Cotra Enterprises Sdn. Bhd.

This collaboration is based on high-quality research led by Prof. Dr. Norfilza and Prof. Dr. Raja Affendi Raja Ali, emphasizing the importance of the gut-brain axis and the benefits of lactobacillus in cultured milk drinks for gut health, immunity, and managing depression symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal expressed confidence that Prof. Dr. Norfilza’s appointment as Medical Advisor would leverage her expertise in probiotics and gut health to advance research in this field. He also hopes that this R&D initiative will enhance the nutritional quality of VITAGEN products, bringing greater benefits to consumers.

                                                        23rd October 2024-The Research Agreement Signing Ceremony between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and TRB Chemedica Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. took place at the lobby of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM).

This collaboration aims to evaluate the stability and sterility of a new eye drop formulation, which has the potential to benefit patients suffering from dry eye disease and corneal injuries.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, Deputy Dean of Industry and Community Engagement, represented the Dean and stated that this partnership symbolizes the fusion of industry and university expertise, creating new opportunities for ophthalmic therapies. She emphasized UKM’s commitment to exploring new potentials in ophthalmology with the support of various stakeholders.

Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Morgan Wong, Deputy Country Manager, and Ms. Lee Chai Yuin, Senior Product Manager from TRB Chemedica Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., along with Assistant Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastian, and lecturers from the Department of Ophthalmology.

It is hoped that this collaboration will bring significant benefits to the field of medicine.

                            1st October 2024 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Asia Innovative Healthcare Network Berhad (AIHNB) to support World Mental Health Day 2024.

Through this collaboration, the UKM Faculty of Medicine received sponsorship worth RM154,660 for the Longest Trust Fall Challenge, an event aimed at breaking the Guinness World Record. The event is scheduled to take place on 12 October 2024.

The program chairperson, Dr. Farah Deena Abd Samad, a Lecturer and Psychiatrist from the Department of Psychiatry, attended the signing ceremony alongside representatives from AIHNB, including Ms. Sylvia Hii Siew Hie, Chairperson & CEO, and Ms. Rachel Hii Siew Yiin, Executive Director, as well as senior AIHNB officers.

UKM Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, expressed pride in this collaboration, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness in Malaysia.

Also present at the ceremony were Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, along with Deputy Deans, lecturers, and staff from the Department of Psychiatry. This partnership is expected to further strengthen efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues among the public.

 
 
 

                

                                                        14th August 2024 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through the Faculty of Medicine, signed a Research Agreement with Zitai Regeneration Cell Sdn Bhd. This agreement involves funding of RM400,000 provided by Zitai to the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (DTERM), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Fauzi Mh Busra.

The ceremony was attended by Lt. Col. (Associate) (PA) Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zulkifli Md. Zainuddin, Assistant Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni), who represented the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, along with the Head of the DTERM Department and department staff. Zitai Regeneration Cell Sdn Bhd was represented by Mr. Li Wing Fu, Director, along with several other directors from the company.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zulkifli Md. Zainuddin expressed his gratitude to Zitai for this collaboration, which provides UKM with the opportunity to conduct in-depth research on the treatment of atopic dermatitis using stem cell therapy.

                

                                                        8th August 2024 – The Research Agreement Signing Ceremony between UKM and  Therapeutic Sdn Bhd (STSB) was successfully held. 

Through this collaboration, STSB has awarded a grant of RM50,000 to support the research project titled “Reparative Mechanism of Exosome Derived From Human Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Ischemic Cardiomyocytes.” The project is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azizah Ugusman, Head of the Physiology Department.

The STSB delegation included Ms. Lau Meng Hong and Mr. Chan Kiat Yang, along with Dr. Chua Kien Hui from Supergenics Berhad, as well as senior officers from STSB. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Nasir Shafiee, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation, represented the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and expressed gratitude for the grant offered by STSB and the opportunity for this collaboration.

Also present at the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, Deputy Dean (Industry and Community Engagement), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Helmy Mokhtar, Assistant Dean (Entrepreneurship), along with lecturers and staff from the Physiology Department.

                                  2nd May 2024 -The Faculty of Medicine signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Academy for Silent Mentor (AFSM) to introduce a surgical training and research program utilizing the silent mentor approach. The MoU was signed by YB Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Kuala Lumpur Campus), representing the UKM Vice-Chancellor, and YB Prof. Dr. Chin Kin Fah, Founder and Executive Director of AFSM.

This collaboration allows UKM medical students to gain a more realistic and practical learning experience in surgical training and anatomy teaching through the silent mentor program, where individuals donate their bodies for medical education. Besides enhancing clinical skills, the program also instills respect and professionalism among students towards patients.

The ceremony was witnessed by Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Sak Cheng Lum from AFSM and Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Deputy Dean of the UKM Faculty of Medicine. Also present were department heads, lecturers, and faculty staff, who support this initiative to strengthen medical education at UKM.

                                  

27th March 2024– The Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology.The UKM Faculty of Medicine, through the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, has established a collaboration with Medical AI Technology Systems Ptd Ltd (MAITS) through a Letter of Intent, which was signed.   

The Head of the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Prof. Datuk Dr. Sabarul Afian, expressed his pride in this partnership. According to him, the faculty has the opportunity to explore advanced AI system technology that utilizes holographic imaging techniques.

Professor Edward (Ted) Mah hopes that this technology will be utilized in teaching and learning, particularly in the field of medicine. He further stated that this technology can also be used to enhance the quality of patient care.

Also present at the event were Prof. Datuk Dr. Sabarul Afian Mokhtar and Assoc. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff. The MAITS delegation was represented by Professor Edward (Ted) Mah and Mario Andreacchio.

                        7th March 2024– The Vice-Chancellor of UKM, Prof. Dato’ Gs. Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Hj. Toriman, accompanied the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UKM and Jeil Pharmaceutical Co Ltd. at Parliament Malaysia.

The Minister stated that this collaboration aligns with the internationalization agenda, which serves as a benchmark for the Ministry of Higher Education, and will benefit society as a whole.

This partnership focuses on facilitating the registration of medicines under the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of pharmaceutical products. This initiative is crucial in strengthening UKM’s role in the fields of pharmacy and healthcare.

Prof. Dato’ Gs. Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan expressed hope that this collaboration would help reduce medical costs at the Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital (HCTM) and the UKM Specialist Children’s Hospital (HPKK), ultimately benefiting patients and the national healthcare system.

                            30th January 2024– The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Document Exchange Ceremony between the UKM Faculty of Medicine and European Wellness Biomedical Group was successfully held.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani, described this collaboration as a golden opportunity to explore research and innovation, while the Director of European Wellness Biomedical Group, Prof. Dato’ Sri Mike Chan, expressed hope that cooperation in the field of stem cells would continue to grow.

The event was also attended by the Dean of the UKM Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor, faculty management, as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Fauzi Mh Busra along with lecturers and staff from the CTERM Department.

The European Wellness Biomedical Group delegation was represented by Prof. Dato’ Sri Mike Chan, Prof. Dr. Dmytro Klokol, and company staff, demonstrating their strong commitment to this collaboration.

                             4th January 2023 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universitas Hasanuddin, Indonesia (UNHAS) to increase cooperation in empowering the fields of medicine and dentistry in both educational institutions.

The signing of the MoU was represented by UKM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Mr. Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Toriman representing UKM, while UNHAS was represented by its Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa. This collaboration, which will continue for the next 5 years, will have a continuous impact on both parties, in addition to improving new collaborations in the field of research, teaching and learning. Also present at this MoU ceremony was UKM’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd. Razak, Pro Vice Chancellor of the Kuala Lumpur Campus, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine UNHAS, Prof. Dr. Dr. Haerani Rashid, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry UNHAS, Prof. Dr. Edy Machmud, UKM Faculty of Medicine Dean, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor and UKM Faculty of Dentistry Dean, Prof. Associate Dr. Tuti Ningseh Mohd Dom.

UNHAS alumni, Dato’ Dr. Sahruddin Jamal, who is the former Menteri Besar of Johor.Hopefully the collaboration between UNHAS and UKM that has been established for almost 7 years will not stop here, and will continue in the future so as to produce smart partnerships and strategic involvement through high-impact research and innovation between regional universities

                            8th December 2023– The Faculty of Medicine, UKM, through the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, has established a collaboration with GNOSIS on a project titled “Prevalence of Genetic Variants in Non-Syndromic Hearing Loss Patients Among Cochlear Implant Recipients at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Using Buccal Mucosa Samples.”

This study aims to benefit cochlear implant patients without syndromes by identifying the causes of congenital hearing loss. Through this research, it is hoped that genetic variants potentially responsible for hearing loss in patients can be identified.

GNOSIS has generously contributed 60 free genetic testing kits worth RM 232,200 to UKM for this study. The use of buccal mucosa cell sampling technology to detect genetic variants associated with congenital hearing loss is a cutting-edge innovation that has not yet been implemented in Malaysia. GNOSIS will also send the samples to a specialized laboratory in Taiwan for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) to detect genetic variants.

The event was attended by Professor Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UKM; Professor Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Deputy Dean of Industry & Community Engagement; and Professor Goh Bee See, MOU Coordinator / Principal Investigator of the Project. Also present were lecturers and staff from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, along with several department heads. Representing Gnosis was Mr. Yee Jo Kuan, Director of Gnosis Laboratory, along with other staff members. Mr. Yee Jo Kuan is also an alumnus of UKM, having graduated in Biomedical Science in 1997.

         

4th September 2023- The visit of the Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muh. Nurdin, to the Faculty of Medicine, UKM, marked a historic moment between the two institutions with the signing of a Letter of Intent for Collaboration today. Dr. Nurdin expressed his intention to establish a Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, using the UKM Faculty of Medicine as a recognized international model.

Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Deputy Dean of HEJIM, representing the Faculty of Medicine, extended her support for this initiative while outlining several immediate steps that need to be taken to realize this vision. Additionally, discussions covered opportunities for exploring international partnerships, research collaborations, as well as teaching and learning initiatives that would benefit both UM Kendari and UKM.

The delegation from UM Kendari was represented by Prof. Maulidiyah and Prof. Muhammad Zakir. Also accompanying them were Prof. Dr. Azrul Azlan Hamzah and Prof. Dr. Akrajaz Ali Umar from IMEN. The Faculty of Medicine, UKM, was represented by Prof. Dr. Norazlina Mohamed (Assistant Dean of Quality and Strategy) and Assoc. Prof. Ruslinda Mustafar (Assistant Dean of Clinical Services).

 

                            24th August 2023-The UKM Faculty of Medicine welcomed a visit from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Indonesia. During this visit, a signing ceremony for the ‘Implementation Agreement’ was held, involving seven departments and two units from both institutions. These included the Department of Surgery (General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery), Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology, Department of Anesthesiology & Intensive Care, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Respiratory Unit, Dermatology Unit, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology. The purpose of this visit was to discuss the development of collaboration between the two institutions in education, research, student mobility, and other aspects.

Representatives from the UNHAS Faculty of Medicine included Dr. Agussalim Bukhari (Deputy Dean of Academic and Student Affairs), Dr. Andi Alfian Zainuddin (Deputy Dean of Networking, Research, and Innovation), Dr. Rina Masadah (Deputy Dean of International Relations), and Dr. Andi Takdir Musbah (Head of Medical Specialist Education), with a total delegation of 27 members.

The UKM Faculty of Medicine was represented by Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor (Dean), Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki (Deputy Dean of HEJIM), Prof. Datin Dr. Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahim (Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies), Prof. Dr. Mohamad Nasir Shafiee (Deputy Dean of Research & Innovation), Prof. Dr. Norazlina Mohamed (Assistant Dean of Quality & Strategy), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zulkifli Md Zainuddin (Assistant Dean of Alumni Relations), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Helmy Mokhtar (Assistant Dean of Entrepreneurship & Creativity), and Dr. Noor Akmal Shareela Ismail (Assistant Dean of Teaching and Image). The event was also attended by heads of departments and lecturers from both faculties.

9 November 2022 – The Faculty of Medicine today signed a Letter of Intent with Zimmer Medical (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. to express the desire to collaborate especially in the field of orthopedics with the company placing a ROSA®️Robotic System unit at Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital, UKM.ROSA®️Robotic System can help patients to achieve correct limb alignment after surgery, where the length of time the patient is in the hospital can be shortened while making this technology work better than conventional knee treatment.

Through ROSA®️Robotic System, UKM will become a training and certification center for surgeons who will perform surgery using the ROSA®️Robotic System in the future.The letter of intent was signed by the Dean, UKM Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim bin Abdul Gafor on behalf of UKM while Zimmer Medical (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. by Mr. Ngui Hup Hin Clarence, Vice President of Zimmer Medical (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.

30 September 2022- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Research Center, UKM Faculty of Medicine signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd. to conduct a joint study to reproduce tissue cells related to the immune system as adapted from technology that has been carried out in Korea.

The study on Natural Killer Cell or known as NK Cell is aimed at developing therapeutic cells that work to kill cancer cells. Once the results of the study are approved, it will be used for cancer patients in Malaysia.

This MoA was signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Affairs, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani with the Chief Executive Officer of NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Park Ji-Youn witnessed by UKM Faculty of Medicine Dean, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor and Medical Consultant NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Lan Leong Chung. Also present  was the Deputy Dean (Industry, Community & Partnerships Affairs), UKM Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki.

1 September 2022 – Bactiguard South East Asia (SEA] Sin Bhd and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM)expanded their collaboration whenthey signed a letter of intent [Loll Bactiguard SEA Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Satish Kemar Subramaniam said the Lol comes with a strong commitment to research-based innovations and products in medical services. UKM Board of Directors chairman, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamad Abd Razak is hopeful that the collaboration will create a significant impact on society and for the benefit of mankind.

Present during the signing ceremony were Bactiguard AB [Sweden]Group chief executive officer Anders Göransson, UKM Faculty of Medicine Deputy Dean Professor Datin Dr Marina Mat Baki, senior officers from Bactiguard AB, Bactiquard SEA Sdn Bhd and UKM., Góransson said the expertise and area of research between UKM and Bactiguard have been a game changer in the standard of healthcare not only domestic ally but also globally through the successful collaboration of Bactiguard with Zimmer Biomet in 2019

24 August 2022 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia through the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine held a Research Agreement Signing Ceremony between UKM and Dyamed Biotech Sdn Bhd. This ceremony took place at Level 3 Meeting Room, Blok Tambahan, HCTM  at 3.00 pm. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Norazah Mohd Nordin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industrial and Community Networking Affairs) representing UKM’s Vice-Chancellor was present and signed the document while witnessed by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UKM, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor.

On behalf of Dyamed Biotech, it was represented by its Company Director, Mr. Theodore Tan and witnessed by Dr. Yap Chung Seng, Clinical Affairs Manager.Among the essence of the planned collaboration is in a study to determine whether the use of sterile polyacrylate wound pad with activated carbon cloth for Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) patients can speed up the healing process.This research agreement will result in many new joint research initiatives that can generate new synergies to provide the best care to patients. This collaboration is also expected to improve and reduce the cost of treatment for diabetic patients, especially diabetic foot ulcer patients.

18 August 2022- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through the Faculty of Medicine is strengthening the collaboration network in the form of clinical training activities and knowledge sharing through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UKM and Monash University Malaysia Sdn. Bhd . The MoU document was signed by  Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research & Innovation and Prof. Mohamed Shajahan Mohamed Yasin, Head Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine and Health Science, Monash University.

Through this MoU will open opportunities for collaboration in the field of research in the future in addition to staff development programs and opportunities through ongoing training and research activities. Hopefully this collaboration will improve and develop ideas and innovations among the experts of both universities as well as give a mandate to the country and society. Also present at this ceremony was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor; and senior officers of UKM and Monash University Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

28 July 2022- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine strengthened the network of collaboration in the form of research through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UKM and the International Medical School, Management & Science University (MSU).

The MoU document was signed by Prof. Dato’ Gs.Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Hj. Toriman, UKM Vice Chancellor and Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mr. Mohd Shukri Yajid, President of MSU who is a UKM alumni from the Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences in 1984.This collaboration can open up opportunities for joint supervision for postdoctoral programs and various postgraduate programs, as well as being the basis for implementing student and staff exchange activities for the development of learning and the sharing of best practices among the citizens of both universities.

Hopefully this collaboration can produce competitive research, the transfer of the latest technology and be able to produce graduates who think critically and innovate.Among those present at this event is  Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani, UKM Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research & Innovation; Prof. Dr. Ismail Sagap, UKM Children’s Specialist Hospital Director as well as UKM and MSU Senior official

22 June 2022– Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with ALCON Pte Ltd. to improve knowledge and skills regarding eye surgery techniques, especially cataract and retina surgery among Ophthalmology Doctor students.

The MoA was signed by  Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani, UKM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and Miss Melisa Chong, Manager Strategic Partnership and HCP Engagement, Alcon Laboratories (M) Sdn. Bhd., witnessed by Prof. Dr. Tan Geok Chin, Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation) UKM Faculty of Medicine and Miss Tinasha Teng, Sale Manager, Alcon Laboratories (M) Sdn. Bhd. Also present to witness this agreement was Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice Chancellor UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus and senior officers of Alcon Pte. Ltd. and UKM Faculty of Medicine officers.

31 May 2022- The Memorandum of Understanding Signing Ceremony between UKM and Sunway University was held today at the Auditorium of the Chancellor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, Kuala Lumpur Campus, UKM. At the ceremony, UKM was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Industry, Alumni and Community Network, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Norazah Mohd Nordin, while Sunway University was represented by its President, Professor Sibrandes Poppema.

Through this collaboration, the Faculty of Medicine UKM and Sunway University will share the knowledge and combination of medical experts in addressing global health challenges through the establishment of the Pandemic Resilience Institute soon.

The Pandemic Resilience Institute will create an education and research hub in the Asian region that will serve as a reference for health expertise, medical science, generate socio -economic impact and improve quality of life. The institute is also expected to develop high-impact cross-disciplinary and translational research, strengthen postgraduate training and teaching in practical, laboratory and clinical training including sub-specialties and develop professional programs that can enhance the marketability of human capital in Malaysia. Also present at the MoU were the Vice Chancellor of Sunway University, Professor Graeme Wilkinson and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor.

28 February 2022 – UKM through the Faculty of Medicine signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ningxia Medical University (NXMU), China.The MoU was signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry, Alumni and Community Network), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Norazah Nordin and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Raja Affendi Raja Ali.
