31st May 2025 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in collaboration with the Nephrology Unit of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) and Kolej Ibu Zain, organized the Health Carnival in conjunction with UKM World Kidney Day 2025. The event aimed to raise public awareness about kidney health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Themed “Buah Pinggang Anda OK? Kenal Pasti Awal, Lindungi Buah Pinggang, the event was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim, who is also a kidney specialist, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, which he said plays a vital role in educating the public—especially the younger generation—about the importance of health maintenance, early detection, and treatment of kidney diseases.
He highlighted that the theme for this year’s World Kidney Day is timely and relevant, offering valuable information and educating the community on the significance of early detection. He added that chronic kidney disease is becoming an increasingly concerning health issue in Malaysia, and such initiatives are crucial in helping the public become more aware of early symptoms, preventive measures, and available treatment options.
Activities during the carnival included free health screenings and check-ups, health forums and interactive sessions with specialists, a healthy cooking demonstration by Chef Ezani, and the Explorace: Eco-Health Track Challenge.
Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, and the Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Medicine.
24th May 2025– The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through its Department of Public Health Medicine (JPKA), successfully organized the “Karnival Jago Gulo Jang” at Felda Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan. The event, held as part of the N9 Sihat initiative, aimed to promote awareness about diabetes prevention and overall health, especially among rural communities. It marked JPKA’s third major community health program in the area.
Led by Prof. Dr. Aniza Ismail and Associate Prof. Dr. Idayu Badilla, with support from JPKA Head Prof. Dr. Rozita Hod, the event also strengthened UKM’s partnership with the local community through the UKM-Sendayan MoU. Master of Public Health students played a central role in planning and executing the program, highlighting UKM’s commitment to producing socially responsible healthcare professionals.
The carnival featured various health-focused activities such as chairobic exercises, health screenings, eye and dental check-ups, a healthcare forum, and healthy cooking demonstrations. Agencies like the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Seremban Health District Office, and USIM also contributed to the event. Information booths for affordable health services and dietary guidance were also made available to the public.
The event was officiated by Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine UKM, and attended by representatives from local authorities and organizations. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of educating both diabetic patients and healthy individuals on managing blood sugar and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through early awareness and preventive care.
4th September 2024 –The World Sexual Health Day 2024 Celebration Programme was successfully held for the first time at the Faculty of Medicine and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The programme was organised by the Department of Family Medicine, HCTM/Faculty of Medicine UKM, in collaboration with various departments and agencies including the Secretariat of Industry and Community Network Affairs, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, HCTM Corporate Communications Department, HCTM Nursing Department, Department of Public Health Medicine UKM, Department of Family Medicine USM, National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), Asia Oceania Federation of Sexology (AOFS), Cheras Health Office, and UKM Specialist Centre (UKMSC). This initiative was held in line with this year’s theme, “Positive Relationships,” which aimed to highlight the importance of sexual health and the promotion of healthy relationships grounded in Malaysia’s socio-cultural and religious values.
The main objective of the programme was to raise public awareness of sexual health, reduce stigma surrounding this sensitive topic, and encourage open and professional dialogue between patients and healthcare providers. Neglecting sexual health can have a negative impact on both mental and physical well-being, and may worsen existing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Therefore, medical practitioners are encouraged to view sexual health as an essential component of comprehensive patient care, on par with other aspects of physical health.
Overall, the programme had a positive impact on participants and the broader community through educational sessions, health screenings, and engagement with medical experts. Sincere appreciation and congratulations are extended to all parties involved in the success of this event. It is hoped that this initiative will serve as a catalyst for future efforts to promote informed, respectful, and open conversations around sexual health, paving the way for a healthier and more aware Malaysian society.
20th May 2023 –Deputy Minister of Human Resources, YB Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, officiated the celebration of World Voice Day held at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
The programme, themed “The Voice: Pulse of Life”, was jointly organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA), and NIOSH.
The main focus of the event was to raise public awareness about vocal cord care and the risk factors that could lead to damage or even cancer of the vocal cords.
Also in attendance was UKM Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Industry, Alumni and Community Network, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Norazah Mohd Nordin, who in her speech highlighted UKM’s commitment to engaging in community outreach activities that foster closer ties with the public and promote national health awareness.
As part of the programme, renowned Malaysian singer and vocal coach Datuk Shafinaz Selamat led a special forum titled “Voice for Work, Work for Voice”, where she shared insights on voice care, especially for professionals who rely heavily on their voice.
Other distinguished guests included Deputy Secretary-General (Policy & International) of the Ministry of Human Resources, Tuan A. Maniam; Senior Undersecretary of the Management Division, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Shahruddin Abu Sohot; Rector of ASWARA, Prof. Ts. Dr. Ruslan Abdul Rahim; Executive Director of NIOSH, Tuan Haji Ayop Salleh; and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UKM, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor.
4th March 2023 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in collaboration with the Negeri Sembilan Foundation and the Village Development and Security Committee (MPKK) of Kampung (F) Sendayan, successfully organised a Community Service Programme in conjunction with World Kidney Day 2023. The programme was held at the Village Hall of Kampung (F) Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan, from 8.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
The primary objective of this programme was to raise awareness among the local community regarding the importance of kidney health, while also providing rural populations, particularly those in high-risk groups, with access to essential health services.
A range of engaging and educational activities were offered during the event, including free health screenings, medical consultations with specialists, health exhibitions, healthy food booths, and interactive sessions with nutritionists. In addition, a dedicated Kids Zone featured activities such as colouring competitions, explorace, and a “Wheel of Fortune” game to promote health education among children in a fun and interactive way.
The programme received an overwhelming response, with more than 300 participants in attendance. The closing ceremony was officiated by YB Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister of Health Malaysia, who also delivered a keynote address highlighting the importance of community-based health initiatives and the need for preventive healthcare awareness.
In conclusion, the programme successfully fulfilled its objectives by fostering greater health awareness and encouraging healthier lifestyles among community members. It also served as a meaningful platform to strengthen collaboration between academic institutions, government agencies, and the local community in the shared mission of enhancing public health.
