History

Research Center for Islamic Economics and Finance (EKONIS) or formerly known as Islamic Economics and Finance Research Group was established in 2001.

In 2010, EKONIS was granted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia as a center of excellence. The mission of the center is to foster the development of Islamic economics and finance fields by delivering the best research and providing the resources for scholars to develop themselves by the way of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

The EKONIS contributes to the wide variety of teaching about the Islamic economics and finance available at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia:

Both the Faculties of Economics and Business and Faculty of Islamic Studies provide full-time teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also full-time research programme.

School of Economics and Department of Shari’ah Lecturerships have been introduced in the University Faculties of Economics and Business, and Islamic Studies, respectively.  Members of the EKONIS teach within these schools of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, for example: Fiqh for Economists, Islamic Banking and Usul Fiqh.

The EKONIS is also planning to offer External Studies Programme, which provides to the wider public a more informed understanding of Islamic economics and finance.

Regular seminar and lectures held at the EKONIS cover a broad range of topics and disciplines.
