Conflicts in Southeast Asia since independence can hardly be defined as genuine ethnic conflicts. However, ethnicity always is mentioned as relevant factor either in analysis, media reporting or the self-description of those involved in the conflict. Why does ethnicity play such a role? How has ethnicity been modified as a result of development and changes? Is ethnicity and ethnic/cultural identity an attempt to reduce the complexity of the current world?
