International students must meet the English language proficiency requirements by achieving the minimum score or band as specified in the equivalency table: HEET (5 Low), TOEFL iBT (31-45), IELTS (4.0), or MUET Level 2.0 (Band 2.0). Examination results must be submitted during the application process.
International students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements may proceed with their studies under the following conditions:
- They are allowed to take the internal English Preparation Course at UKM during their studies and must comply with the rules set by the Malaysian Immigration Department. Students will receive a letter of offer to enroll in their study program.
- Students taking the internal English Preparation Course must sit for the IELTS, TOEFL, MUET, HEET, or any other examination aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to fulfill the English graduation requirement. The list of examinations aligned with CEFR is subject to approval by the Senate from time to time.
The faculty may grant exemptions to international candidates who:
- Hold academic qualifications from any local universities recognized by the Senate; or
- Come from countries where English is the official language, or have academic qualifications from institutions that use English as the medium of instruction.
Candidates may be exempted from the English language proficiency requirements; however, they must take the English Proficiency Test (EPT). If they do not achieve the required level set by the program, they will be required to attend and pass the English Skills Module (EPM).
Exemptions from the English language requirements are also available for students from the Nusantara region, specifically from Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and Southern Thailand, who are enrolled in programs that use languages closely related to Malay.
