Initiatives in controlling high drug price

  • Drug prices and expenditures are reported to increase every year. This poses challenges for the governments of many countries as it becomes harder to maintain the public affordability of pharmaceutical drugs. To achieve drug price containment, price transparency initiatives are important to be evaluated and implemented as part of the country’s pharmaceutical policy. In view of that, our conducted research includes evaluating the evidence and models for medicine price transparency practice, reviewing the scenarios for medicine price transparency and control mechanism from the stakeholders of the industries, government and also public’s perspectives and proposed the medicine price transparency initiative model for private health care system in Malaysia.

The needs of health economic data for decision making: Estimating the value of treatment for osteoporosis care

Studies have shown that the clinical and economic impacts of osteoporosis and its fracture complication are debilitating, even in most developed countries. Strategies to address the needs of the elderly population especially with chronic disease is one of the main aspirations of the government to enhance the inclusiveness towards an equitable society and improving their wellbeing. Strategies such as promoting access and quality use of medicines should be intensified towards achieving the aspiration. The effort shall be achieved through health economic evaluations with the aims of estimating the cost-utility and budget impact of bisphosphonates in the prevention and/or treatment of osteoporosis. The magnitude of difference in the effectiveness, utility and costs to estimate the worth values of bisphosphonates compared to standard treatment will be evaluated to set for spending priorities. Complementary, budget impact analysis evaluated the expected changes associated with the uptake of cost-effective treatment to estimate the affordability of treatment for a coverage decision. Decision makers need evidence from both of these tools in planning, budgeting and financing mechanism to strengthen population health, optimizing financial resources and sustaining the healthcare system eventually enhancing the healthcare delivery system.
