Workshop on Smarter Phonics Level 3

SMARTER is an acronym for ‘A Structured and Multisensory AppRoach To Enhance Reading’. It uses the principles of Orton-Gillingham method of teaching phonics in a systematic and
step-wise manner. SMARTER*phonics builds the brain for literacy by employing current reading science research of the importance of listening, phonological awareness, vocabulary. Its cumulative and repetitive structure and use of multi-sensorial activities have been shown in various projects to enhance both reading and writing. SMARTER*phonics is currently used in all preschools in Sarawak.

Target Participants

Parents, teachers in kindergartens, preschools and primary schools, teaching institutes, education officers and other interested individuals

Aim of Workshop

This Level 3 workshop extends the skills learnt from Levels 1 and 2 workshops and will equip participants with knowledge of:

• seven types of syllables
• syllabication rules to read multisyllabic words
• spelling rules for English
• roots, prefixes and suffixes
• rules for plurals
