PROGRAM SUMMARY

The program aims to produce research graduates who are fully equipped with the ability to conduct research, possess data analysis skills, and develop professionalism among Muslim social scientists. In realizing the significance of interdisciplinary research in Islamic Civilization, the Institute of Islam Hadhari (The Institute of Islamic Civilization) has continuously aspired to produce graduates that are highly competent, equipping them with the relevant and necessary applied knowledge to contribute to our multicultural society. The program offers 4 major interdisciplinary research foci: 1) Politics & Leadership 2) Socio-Culture 3) Economics and Business, and 4) Science & Technology, Health and Environment.

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

The Institute of Islam Hadhari is one of the most active research institutes in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). By November 2020, the Institute of Islam Hadhari will be offering all students new upgraded facilities such as a students’ discussion and consultation room, which will be provided in addition to the existing UKM library, computer lab, students’ services facilities and lush green campus. Students also have the best opportunity to consult with and gain access to the best supervision available from professors of multiple backgrounds who are experts in their respective fields. The students are also welcomed to join and participate in the relevant workshops, discourse, seminars, and annual conferences. Additionally, students can actively join our various programs or activities under the student’s club, Nadi Hadhari.

Our institute is accessible by public transport; the nearest train station is the UKM KTM Train Station. It is also in close proximity to Putrajaya (15km), Kuala Lumpur International Airport – KLIA (30km) and the Kuala Lumpur city centre (30km). Public and in-campus buses are provided to all students at minimal fares.

Programme Requirement

A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:

1. Masters Degree from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or

3. A candidate who is currently attending a full time a Master programme under paragraph 6(1) (a) in the University and is certified by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee/Centre for Graduate Management to convert his/her status to a Doctorate programme with the approval of Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Institute; or

4. Bachelor’s Degree with excellent results from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

5. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and

6. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable).

A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

  2. Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October until November (for the next February intake) and every April until May (for the September intake).
  3. Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.
