ISLAMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME

Faculty of Islamic Studies

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Master of Islamic Studies in Faculty of Islamic Studies UKM offers five (5) specializations namely: Shariah, Usuluddin and Philosophy, Arabic Studies and Islamic Civilization, Da’wah and Leadership Studies, and Quran and Sunnah Studies. The specializations are five (5) core areas that form the basis of contemporary Islamic issues. All programmes offered have been recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The modes of study offered are in Research.

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is the first faculty welcoming all UKM students to the main campus. The building is located near the main entrance of UKM Bangi, strategically build-up opposite UKM’s mosque with greenery nature, creating a calm and fresh ambiance to the student. The faculty also provides facilities such as Datin Andek Masnah Resource and Documentation Room, Karel Room / Graduate Discussion Room, Association Room, Computer Lab, Audio Visual Laboratory and so on to support graduate needs. Students will also be closely guided by experienced supervisors to plan and determine the direction of research as well as the impact of publications throughout their studies. Furthermore, the Secretariat of Postgraduate Studies also organises academic programmes and visits for the student from time to time.

The Faculty of Islamic Studies is well known for its research opportunities and access to renowned scholars. On a beautiful campus, students will be able to work closely with lecturers and researchers who are always ready to guide them and establish meaningful relationships with their peers.  

Programme Requirement

A person who intends to apply for a master’s programme should have the following Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree by obtaining a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or having accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or institution who has accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
  1. Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University or any institution of higher learning or an equivalent degree from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate;
  1. any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL);
  1. fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable) and
  1. fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

  2. Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October (for the March intake of the following year) and every April (for the October intake).
  3. Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.
