PROGRAM SUMMARY

IMEN offers postgraduate study (M.Sc, Ph.D) by research thesis in the following fields:

  1. MEMS/NEMS & Nanoelectronics (MEMS)
  2. Micro and Nanoelectronics System (MINES)
  3. Nanophotonics & Quantum Electronics (NQE)
  4. Organic Printed Hybrid Flexible Electronics (OHFEL)
  5. Microelectronic Packaging & Materials (MIPAC)

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN) is recognized by the High Education Centre of Excellence (HiCoE) in Malaysia for research regarding Nanotechnology with highly qualified researchers. IMEN conducts research in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), Organic and Printed electronics, Photonics, Semiconductor Packaging and Nanoelectronics System. IMEN is fully equipped with various resources and facilities which have attracted international students all over the globe to study here. Faculty members are very cooperative and track student progress through weekly and monthly based meetings and also offer help in other matters besides studies. Lab environment and overall institute environment is amazing. Students have multiple study areas with air condition and high-speed internet that can be accessed 24/7. IMEN has collaboration with top universities and industries around the world that can provide overseas attachment programs for the students. 

Programme Requirement

A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:

1. Masters Degree from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or

3. A candidate who is currently attending a full time a Master programme under paragraph 6(1) (a) in the University and is certified by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee/Centre for Graduate Management to convert his/her status to a Doctorate programme with the approval of Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Institute; or

4. Bachelor’s Degree with excellent results from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

5. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and

6. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable).

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

  2. Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October until November (for the next February intake) and every April until May (for the September intake).
  3. Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.
