SCIENCE &TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME

PROGRAMME SUMMARY

The research-based program offered in diverse areas in Science and Technology to provide students with the opportunity to experience the research process. Our postgraduates are nurtured to build their research reputation for excellence in scientific discovery. Students will be part of a strong research community that contributes to the society or some may be tackling global challenges. There are many opportunities for the research to be published. Students are expected to publish at least two articles in ISI indexed journals. Some of the research in Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) strives to make distinctive contribution to science by taking multidisciplinary approaches and having industrial or institutional collaborations. FST students are also encouraged to access and engage with research networks both within Malaysia and internationally. The Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Mobility Program or international grants may be able to support with travel grants and/or research attachments. Participation to conferences are encouraged and may be supported by the supervisor’s research fund or other travel grants.

The Faculty of Science & Technology (FST) is one of the largest faculty in UKM and is renowned for its quality education and research, and lecturers who are well-known figures in their respective fields at both national and international levels. Programme Requirements

A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
  1. other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
  1. a student currently pursuing full time master’s programme under sub regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/ Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/ Director; or
  1. Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/ Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board
  1. any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
  1. fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
  1. fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

  2. Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October until November (for the next February intake) and every April until May (for the September intake).
  3. Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.
